Three car idea is fantasy says Mosley

Ferrari have been pushing for the idea of having three cars on the grid.

MONZA // Ferrari's wish to have three cars in Formula One next season is a fantasy, outgoing International Automobile Federation (FIA) president Max Mosley said. Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali thinks an extra car for the bigger teams would make the sport more interesting and sees retired champion Michael Schumacher, who recently called off a comeback bid because of injury, as a potential third driver.

However, Mosley said it was too late to change the rules for next year after a new Concorde Agreement, which outlines how Formula One is run, was signed between his governing body and the teams in August. "Three cars would mean rewriting the Concorde Agreement, and the time to think about three cars was before we all signed that, not after," Mosley, who steps down in October, said at the Italian Grand Prix.

"Three cars is a nice story but it's a little bit of fantasy and difficult to get unanimous agreement on." Media reports have said a few other teams are interested in the three-car plan despite at least three new outfits being due to swell the grid in 2010. Asked if the rules could be bent so that the big teams used their smaller rivals to effectively run a third car, Mosley said: "That would mean another rewrite of the Concorde Agreement."
