Having only just joined the team, the first chance I had to meet everyone was in December at the training camp in Spain. Although I knew many people before, it’s important to build a relationship with everybody as this can help a lot in the races.
One person I did know before joining was my good friend, Fernando Gaviria. My friendship with Fernando was one of the main reasons that I joined the team – that was what pushed me to make the decision to change from Deceuninck-Quickstep to UAE Team Emirates. In the end I had four great years at Deceuninck, but I preferred to follow my heart and join Fernando.
In sport, it’s very rare that you find a friendship like mine and Fernando’s. It is so strong – he’s not just a teammate but also a friend. We room together at the races and live close by to each other in Monaco.
In other sports, two strikers may play well together in football and score lots of goals, likewise in cricket, a batsman may play well with someone else at the other end and score lots of runs. It’s all about having that trust in someone else, knowing where they will be, their strengths and how best to help them.
In cycling, a lead-out man and the sprinter have a special relationship. As a lead-out man, it is my job to safely navigate Fernando through the chaos of a bunch finish and make sure he doesn’t waste energy he needs for the sprint; keeping him out of trouble and getting him to the perfect place so he can launch his attack and take the victory. Helping Fernando win at the highest level is important to me and something that motivates me a lot.
Fernando and I have the same racing mentality, and we see it in the same way, so as the race is coming to an end we never talk much. He just needs to call out "Max" and I understand what he wants. When he calls my name, I know that he has lost his wheel or we are not in the right position, and then we look to change.
Fernando is a special character and it can take time to gain his confidence but, with me, from the very first race, we understood each other, and he trusted me completely. When you have that relationship off the bike, you always manage to give a little bit more for your teammate – or, in this case, my friend.
We’re working hard to return to the highest level and bring success for the UAE Team Emirates.
Having just finished our first race of the 2020 season together in my home country Argentina, Fernando has already notched up three victories which is great for the team. It's always special for me to return to Argentina and a great opportunity to see friends and family.
The fans always make it one of my favourite races of the year and to wear the national champions jersey this year and have had a good race with Fernando also helped a lot.
As a lead-out man you are judged on the results of your sprinter, so I am content with how the Vuelta a San Juan went overall. A fourth place in the General Classification for fellow new man Brandon McNulty was also great to see in his first outing for the team.
I think we animated the race well and proved we could all work together. Everyone played their part and there were very few times where a UAE Team Emirates rider wasn’t at the front leading the peloton.
The season is still early and there is plenty of work to do before the next block of racing, but it is a promising start for the team and a sign of things to come.
Next up for me is the Tour Colombia where we are going with many options. Sebastian Molano and me for the sprints and Fabio Aru and the other Colombian riders will be active in the mountain stages. It’s a beautiful race and the Colombian public have an amazing love for the sport of cycling.
Shortly after Colombia is the UAE Tour starting on February 23 from the Pointe on the palm and finishing on the 29th in Abu Dhabi. It’s no secret that the UAE Tour is one of the biggest goals of the season.
Fernando won a stage last year and we will go there looking for the win wherever we can. [Tadej] Pogačar will also be there to challenge for the GC so we have many options.
It’s our home race so we know all eyes will be on us that week but that’s the way we like it. I’d like to thank all the UAE fans for their support and look forward to seeing you all soon at the UAE Tour.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

BIOSAFETY LABS SECURITY LEVELS
Biosafety Level 1
The lowest safety level. These labs work with viruses that are minimal risk to humans.
Hand washing is required on entry and exit and potentially infectious material decontaminated with bleach before thrown away.
Must have a lock. Access limited. Lab does not need to be isolated from other buildings.
Used as teaching spaces.
Study microorganisms such as Staphylococcus which causes food poisoning.
Biosafety Level 2
These labs deal with pathogens that can be harmful to people and the environment such as Hepatitis, HIV and salmonella.
Working in Level 2 requires special training in handling pathogenic agents.
Extra safety and security precautions are taken in addition to those at Level 1
Biosafety Level 3
These labs contain material that can be lethal if inhaled. This includes SARS coronavirus, MERS, and yellow fever.
Significant extra precautions are taken with staff given specific immunisations when dealing with certain diseases.
Infectious material is examined in a biological safety cabinet.
Personnel must wear protective gowns that must be discarded or decontaminated after use.

The highest level for biosafety precautions. Scientist work with highly dangerous diseases that have no vaccine or cure.

Personnel must wear a positive pressure suit for protection. On leaving the lab this must pass through decontamination shower before they have a personal shower.
Entry is severely restricted to trained and authorised personnel. All entries are recorded.
Entrance must be via airlocks.
