ABU DHABI // Police want to ensure the only cars reaching high speeds during the Grand Prix weekend are on the Yas Marina Circuit, not the city's roads. Temporary speed restrictions are being imposed on certain stretches of highway leading to Yas Island. "Many people will be attending this event, that's why we make these restrictions," a spokesman for Abu Dhabi Police said. "We also invite the public to use alternative routes, as there will be [a lot of] traffic."
On the Sheikh Khalifa Expressway between Shahama and Saadiyat Island, a 80kph speed limit will be imposed. On the Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Road between Abu Dhabi and Shahama, the speed limit will be reduced to 100kph. Mobile radar patrols are being carried out to ensure motorists comply with the restrictions, which will remain in place until Monday. Officials have also urged race-goers to use public transport to reach the circuit, with park-and-ride schemes operating from Marina Mall, Zayed Sports City and Shahama.
