No 1 goal for Slater

Leeds // Billy Slater is not content with helping Melbourne Storm become Australia's greatest side, he wants world domination. The Storm have appeared in the past four successive Grand Finals and face the Leeds Rhinos in Sunday's World Club Challenge, a trophy they last won 10 years ago. Two years ago they lost the annual game between the England and the Australian champions 11-4 to Leeds, who have been similarly dominant with three successive Super League Grand Final wins.

That provides an added incentive as Slater wants to be able to look back up on having been part of a Storm side classed as legends. "Of course that's what you want," said the full-back, who was named the world's best player in 2008. "It's hard to reflect on what we have achieved, the Premierships over the past four years, as football just keeps going. You don't get time to reflect on those things. It is always about looking forward and trying to better yourself.

"At the end of the day, when you have retired, that's when you can sit at home and think about what side were better and where your side were at the time. "At the end of the day you want to look at trying to be the number one side. But, during the game, it's about getting your processes right and doing the things that will get you to that result. So it's important to focus. When you get to the top it becomes harder to stay there."

He added: "I see it as an opportunity for us to pick up the tag of world club champions. There's a lot of good sides out there in the world and to be ranked number one would be a great sense of achievement for the club. Leeds are just in the way of what we want." akhan@thenational.ae
