Mumbai Indians posted an seven-wicket victory over Pune Warriors in their Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter in Mumbai today.
Ambati Rayudu and Sachin Tendulkar added 74 for the second wicket to set up the last-ball victory after Pune were skittled out for 118 in 17.2 overs.
Munaf Patel (three for eight) was the pick of the Mumbai bowlers, while Al Murtaza, Lasith Malinga and Abu Nechim claimed two wickets each.
Batting first after winning the toss Pune had a dismal start losing four wickets with just 17 runs on the board after five overs as Nechim and Patel took two wickets each in their first overs.
Robin Uthappa and Mohnish Mishra stemmed the slide for a while, but the Mumbai bowlers kept up the pressure forcing the batsmen to make mistakes.
Uthappa held the lower middle-order together by putting up useful partnerships worth 35 each with Mishra and Murali Kartik, who fell to Murtaza and Malinga respectively.
With Uthappa (45 off 37 balls) holing out to an athletic Kieron Pollard catch in the deep at 98 in the 15th over, the hopes of a late blitz faded.
The remaining batsmen did not have the class to negotiate Malinga and Patel as the innings folded up on 118 with 2.4 overs remaining.
In reply, Tendulkar and Rayudu took Mumbai to 57 after nine overs despite the early loss of James Franklin, who was sent back by Shrikant Wagh.
The pair soon brought up their 50-run stand off 45 balls and with victory in sight the duo accelerated, but Rahul Sharma gave his team a moment of relief by dismissing Tendulkar for a 39-ball 35.
Mumbai had another scare in the next over when Rayudu (37 off 40 balls) holed out in the deep off Alfonso Thomas, but Andrew Symonds blasted back-to-back fours off Wayne Parnell to ease nerves.
Pune bowlers, however, managed to push the game to the last over, but Symonds (16 not out) and Rohit Sharma (20 not out) held their nerve to power Mumbai to their third victory of the tournament on the last ball.
