It’s official: Luis Garcia won Halloween 2016.
The former Liverpool forward is most famously remembered for his ‘ghost goal’ against Chelsea that decided their semi-final in the 2005 Uefa Champions League.
And in keeping with the Halloween spirit, Garcia’s outfit made reference to that moment by dressing up as a ghost and posing next to a football on the goal-line.
“Happy Halloween!! Some will find it funny...others Scary!” he wrote on Instagram alongside the photo.
After a goalless draw in the first leg at Stamford Bridge, Garcia scored the infamous goal in the fourth minute of the return fixture at Anfield. The Spaniard chipped the ball past goalkeeper Petr Cech and John Terry before William Gallas attempted to clear the ball off the line, only for referee Lubos Michel to award the goal.
Chelsea protested the legitimacy of the goal, with then-manager Jose Mourinho describing it as a “ghost goal”. Liverpool went on to win the Champions League final against AC Milan in a match that has been labelled the ‘Miracle of Istanbul’.
