FA Cup holders Arsenal face Premier League champions Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday.
The traditional curtain raiser to the top-flight season in England may not answer many questions ahead of the Premier League season, but here is a breakdown of their last five meetings:
Arsenal 1-1 Man City, March 2014
Both sides were in contention for the Premier League four months ago, and the result this day did neither side any favours. David Silva had given City a first-half lead, but Mathieu Flamini’s goal levelled things for the home side after the restart.
Man City 6-3 Arsenal, December 2013
Arsenal were the league leaders, but City gave a big statement of intent of their championship ambitions as goals from Sergio Aguero, Alvaro Negredo, Fernandinho (2), Silva and a Yaya Toure penalty saw them win in emphatic fashion.
Arsenal 0-2 Man City, January 2013
An early red card for a professional foul for Laurent Koscielny killed off Arsenal’s hopes in this encounter at Emirates Stadium. James Milner and Edin Dzeko put City two up and, even though Vincent Kompany was sent off, it did not affect the result.
Man City 1-1 Arsenal, September 2012
City were the league champions, but were struggling to convince early on in what would prove to be an unsuccessful title defence. Joleon Lescott gave them the lead, but Koscielny equalised for Arsenal.
Arsenal 1-0 Man City, April 2012
A late strike from Mikel Arteta gave Arsenal all three points in a match that looked as if it had killed off City’s hopes of being crowned champions. A poor day for Roberto Mancini’s men was summed up in stoppage time by a red card for Mario Balotelli.
