GUANGZHOU, CHINA //Kosuke Kitajima, the multiple Olympic gold medallist from Japan, again suffered disappointment at the Asian Games yesterday, placing fourth in his favoured 100 metre breaststroke.
Kitajima, 28, has seemed out of sorts after a hiatus from competition last year.
He trailed winning compatriot Ryo Tateishi and Kazakhstan's Vladislav Polyakov for the entire race and was beaten for bronze by China's Wang Shuai.
Kitajima also finished fourth in the 50m breaststroke.
"I knew after my turn I wouldn't win the race. Although I swam faster in the morning, I didn't swim fast enough," he said.
On a balmy evening inside the packed Aoti Aquatics centre, the Chinese national anthem was played repeatedly as China won five golds out of seven on the third day of swimming competition.
In the men's 50m freestyle, China's Lu Zhiwu thrashed down the pool to edge out Japan's Masayuki Kishida in a tight race to take gold in 22.37secs. Rammaru Harada of Japan took bronze.
China's Gao Chang took gold with a confident swim in the women's 50m backstroke, easily fending off Japan's Aya Terakawa who trailed more than four-tenths of a second behind her. "My time here is the best in the world right now, so I'm very happy with my swim," Gao said.
The UAE's Mubarak al Besher finished eighth in the second heat of the men's 100m breaststroke and failed to reach the final.

In judo, Khalifa Hamad al Qubaisi won his first match in the 73kg division, defeating Chi Yip Cheung of Hong Kong. He later lost to Hiroyuki Akimoto of Japan.
In table tennis, Rashed Mohammed Hassan won his match in the round of 32, defeating Purshottam Bajracharya of Nepal.
In shooting, Asma Salam al Nuami placed 21st in the finals of the women's 50m prone rifle, and Shamsa Ali al Marzoui was 43rd.
In track cycling, Badr Ali al Balooshi finished second in a preliminary race in men's sprint.
In sailing, Adil Khalid was ninth in a preliminary race in open laser radial. Hamood Salem al Zaidi was ninth in a preliminary race in men's dinghy optimist.
In bowling, Eqab Jaber Nayef was in ninth place after the first round of men's singles Squad A competition, and Ali al Hassan Shaker was 13th. In Squad B, Mohammed Shelaiweeh al Qubaisi and Mahmood Ahmad Alattar were tied for 14th, Hussain Nasir al Suwaidi was 17th, and Sayed Ibrahim al Hashemi was 30th.
In men's chess, Abdullah Hassan had a win and two losses and AR Saleh Salem had a win, a loss and a draw. In women's play, Nora Mohammed Saleh had two draws and a loss, and Kholoud Essa al Zarouni had a win and two losses.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.
The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.
Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.
