Champions Juventus host surprise Serie A leaders Chievo on Saturday hoping to kick-start their season while Mario Balotelli is eyeing his first start for AC Milan when they face Inter in the Milan derby.
Juventus’ start to the fledgling season has been anything but positive, Massimiliano Allegri’s men slipping to two consecutive defeats to sit in the unfamiliar reaches of the table’s bottom four.
Given Juventus, the four-time consecutive champions, have never succumbed to two opening defeats, the vultures are already circling above Turin.
"Something has changed," former AC Milan and Inter player Andres Guglielminpietro told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
"Juventus underwent major changes during the summer. In Italy right now, a lot of the big teams have started the season on a level footing, and with the belief they can win the scudetto."
Only months after Juventus capped a rare league and cup double-winning season by progressing to the Champions League final, where they were beaten by Barcelona, the champions are certainly stuttering as they adapt to life without three players who proved crucial in recent campaigns – Arturo Vidal, Andrea Pirlo and Carlos Tevez.
Juventus lost to chief rivals AS Roma a fortnight ago and with Inter Milan and AC Milan threatening to challenge this season, the pundits can smell an upset.
Allegri has been quick to allay fears, and Brazilian midfielder Hernanes believes recent setbacks were a blip.
“There won’t be any talk of a transition season,” Allegri said in midweek. “For us, the season starts now.”
“Juventus is still the team to beat, they’ve maintained a solid base and we’re still the strongest team in Italy,” said Hernanes, who was signed from Inter two weeks ago.
“We have to forget what happened in the last two games and make sure we collect all three points on Saturday.”
A win against Chievo, who have yet to beat Juventus in the league, is considered a pre-requisite ahead of Tuesday’s visit to Manchester City for their first Champions League group game of the season.
Allegri has already been given a boost, Spanish striker Alvaro Morata returning to training on Thursday after a flu scare. If fit, he would be free to partner Argentinian Paulo Dybala, allowing Allegri to rest Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic and keep some powder dry for Tuesday’s outing.
It is early days yet but after Roma’s win over Juve, Inter host Milan on Sunday night hoping to add lustre to their positive start to the season by beating their city rivals for the first time in three outings.
Inter striker Stevan Jovetic, on loan from Manchester City, has hit four goals in two games for the club, but coach Roberto Mancini is sweating on the fitness of newly-signed Brazil defender Joao Miranda after he suffered a suspected knee ligament injury in a friendly with the United States.
Liverpool misfit Balotelli re-joined AC Milan on a season-long loan deal several weeks ago in a bid to transform a career that has dipped dramatically since Italy’s doomed 2014 World Cup campaign.
He has yet to feature in a league game under Milan coach Sinisa Mihajlovic, but fellow striker Luiz Adriano believes Balotelli’s arrival has given the team a boost.
“Mario’s a great player and has come here to give us an important boost. The squad needs everybody and he will help us a lot,” said the Brazilian, who signed for Milan recently after eight successful season with Shakhtar Donestk in UKraine.
He added: “I’m very curious to see what it will be like on Sunday. When I played in the derby in Ukraine, Shakhtar against Dinamo Kiev, the whole country shut down.”
Roma, meanwhile, travel to newly-promoted Frosinone, based in the outskirts of the Italian capital, with coach Rudi Garcia expected to tinker with his formation with creative midfielder Miralem Pjanic sidelined by a calf injury.

When the W Dubai – The Palm hotel opens at the end of this year, one of the highlights will be Massimo Bottura’s new restaurant, Torno Subito, which promises “to take guests on a journey back to 1960s Italy”. • Tap started in May 2013 in Kuwait, allowing Middle East businesses to bill, accept, receive and make payments online “easier, faster and smoother” via goSell and goCollect. • 2checkout’s “all-in-one payment gateway and merchant account” accepts payments in 200-plus markets for 2.4-3.9 per cent, plus a Dh1.2-Dh1.8 currency conversion charge. The US provider processes online shop and mobile transactions and has 17,000-plus active digital commerce users.
• PayPal is probably the best-known online goods payment method - usually used for eBay purchases - but can be used to receive funds, providing everyone’s signed up. Costs from 2.9 per cent plus Dh1.2 per transaction.

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.
