Openers Gautam Gambhir and Chris Lynn put Gujarat Lions to the sword as they guided Kolkata Knight Riders to an emphatic victory in their opening Indian Premier League match with a record-breaking partnership.
Captain Gambhir and Lynn made easy work of the run chase with an unbroken stand of 184 as Kolkata won by 10 wickets with more than five overs to spare.
It was the biggest partnership in the franchise’s history for any wicket, and underlined a dominant display for the two-time tournament champions.
The effort was also the highest total chased down with all 10 wickets still standing in any Twenty20 match.
The Gujarat innings, which came after Gambhir had elected to field after winning the toss, had begun promisingly after some early big hitting from Brendon McCullum (35).
Although he was trapped leg before by the frugal Kuldeep Yadav, who had figures of two for 25 in his four overs, Suresh Raina held the innings together with 68 off 51 balls to see them to a total of 183 for four, with Dinesh Karthik weighing in with a quick-fire 47 towards the end of the innings.
But any hopes that Gujarat had that the score was enough to win were quickly swept aside by Gambhir and Lynn as they immediately went after the home side’s bowling.
Lynn struck eight sixes in his innings as he made 93 off 41 balls, while Gambhir struck 12 boundaries in his 76 off 48 balls, as the Gujarat bowling had no respite.
There are two games on Saturday with Kings XI Punjab playing their first game as they host Rising Pune Supergiant, while Royal Challengers Bangalore go up against Delhi Daredevils.
Gujarat are next in action on Sunday when they travel to defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad, while Kolkata are also away on the same day as they visit Mumbai Indians.
