Myanmar were knocked out of the Southeast Asian Games football tournament on Monday night after suffering a one-goal loss to Indonesia.

The fallout was swift, with fans taking to rioting around Yangon – throwing stones, battling police water cannons and even tearing out the seats of Yangon Stadium and throwing them back toward the pitch.

Police eventually detained eight fans, who were distraught after Myanmar were eliminated despite being equal on points with Indonesia and owning a better goal difference – they were undone by head-to-head results.

“We had high hopes for the Myanmar team. We even planned to go to Naypyidaw today to watch the semi-final,” one fan, Phone Myint Khaing, told Agence France-Presse. “I’m lost for words to describe how sad we are. It’s heartbreaking.”
