Goosen and Cejka in lead at South African Open

Retief Goosen and Alex Cejka shared top spot after yesterday's rain-affected first round of the South African Open. The opening round in Durban was carried over after heavy rain made golfing conditions impossible on Thursday. Goosen, in front of his home crowd, and Cejka, the German, both went around in eight-under-par rounds of 64 to hold a one-shot advantage over Ernie Els and Charl Schwartzel.

Simpson gets a new deal

Joe Simpson has signed a new three-year contract with Wasps that will keep him at the Aviva Premiership side until 2014. The England Saxons scrum-half, who is 22, made his senior debut in 2008 and has made 47 appearances for the Adams Park club. Tony Hanks, the club's director of rugby, said: "We want to be involved in his ongoing development and success both for his club and at international level in the future."

Hopkins wants to make history

Bernard Hopkins is confident he will become the oldest boxer to win a world title when he takes on Jean Pascal, the WBC light-heavyweight champion, tonight. Hopkins, who will be 46 on January 15, would beat George Foreman, who won in 1994 against Michael Moorer at the age of 45 years, 10 months. "I want everyone to know this is unique," he said. "A lot of people are going to have to adjust their books after this fight, after this one-sided fight."

Fresh injury blow for Yao

Yao Ming, the Houston Rockets centre from China, has suffered another setback in his comeback when a stress facture was found in his left ankle. The new problem was discovered during an MRI scan. The seven-time NBA All-Star has been sidelined since November 10 with a bone bruise to his left ankle. Yao, 30, missed all of last season after fracturing a bone in his left foot, an injury that required surgery. He has played in only five games this season.
