Tiger Woods played a full round at Royal Liverpool on Sunday and on Monday said he is optimistic about his chances at Hoylake, where he won the last time the British Open was played there, in 2006.
“I can do whatever I want. I’m at that point now,” he said ahead of his second tournament since back surgery.
“Before I had the procedure, I was at the point I couldn’t do anything. This is how I used to feel. I had been playing with it for a while, and I had my good weeks and bad weeks. Now they are all good.”
Woods, 38, was handed an early start for Thursday’s first round, going off at 9.04am in the company of Angel Cabrera, the two-time major winner, and Henrik Stenson, ranked No 2 in the world.
Phil Mickelson, the defending champion, is set for a 2.05pm start in a marquee grouping with the 2012 Open champions Ernie Els and current Masters champion Bubba Watson.
