Matteo Manassero, the Golf in Abu Dhabi global ambassador, was in the capital on Monday to hold a golf clinic for amateur golfers at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, the Gary Player-designed course.
Emerging talent
Providing tuition to the stars of the future should not have been much of a chore for Manassero, given he remains one of the youngest guys on the European Tour. Despite that, the 22-year-old Italian has four victories already on his resume. In 2010, he won Spain’s Castello Masters to become the tour’s youngest ever champion, at 17 years and 188 days.
Troublesome 2015
Manassero’s form has taken a severe dip this year, though, after he made significant changes both physically and technically in a quest to gain length off the tee. Two years ago, he was 25th in the world rankings, but has now dropped to No. 536. In fact, Manassero has missed 17 cuts in 2015, including his past 12 events.
Time to recharge
“Yes, it definitely is,” Manassero said. “This winter’s going to be mainly about that: working at restoring the energy I’ve lost from a long year. It’s been a tough season, because I’ve had up and downs. It’s just a bad season that can happen, but one that I want to bounce back from. I’m working on things I need to improve and trying to relax at the same time to be ready for next year.”
Two-way capital gains
“Obviously it’s always good to be in Abu Dhabi. I gave a clinic and was able to teach the amateurs a couple of things I’ve gotten to know and understand playing golf. It’s nice to do those things and give back a little bit to people who’ve helped you. And it’s always great to be in Saadiyat – it’s one of the places I like the most.”
Milestone moment
On Sunday, Gary Player, the nine-time major champion and fitness fanatic, celebrated his 80th birthday. Standing on the South African’s course at Saadiyat, Manassero acknowledged there is probably no one better to provide an example of a top golfer’s longevity. “He is special guy in that respect,” Manassero said. “I’d be a very lucky man if I get to Gary Player’s age – he’s one of the very few in the world able to do what he does. He’s got so much energy and is a great person as well.”
