The National's Sport cover for the Friday, April 17 issue, featuring Al Ahli as their hopes of a climb in the Arabian Gulf League effectively came to an end with a 2-2 draw against Al Nasr.

The Dubai power club are just fifth in the AGL, on 34 points and on par with straggling Dubai rivals Al Wasl (34) and Nasr (33). Seven points behind Al Shabab for fourth and with no mathematical chance of reaching one of the top two and automatic Asian Champions League qualifying places.

John McAuley writes about the down season at the Rashid Stadium:

“Just when Al Ahli threatened to finally stir, they encountered another, potentially defining, blow.

“The Dubai club have staggered through their Arabian Gulf League title defence, marooned mid-table and drifting towards a hugely disappointing finish.

“Questions have been raised concerning the club’s winter transfer policy, that the squad has been deprived of a truly top-class striker to fire a side that has amassed the second fewest goals among the division’s top 10. The motives of coach Cosmin Olaroiu had been queried, as well, so too the motivation of his players.”

But giving up a two-goal advantage on Thursday simply typified “a disjointed campaign”.

“Just when Ahli threatened to stir, to jolt for one final push, they have taken a fateful step back.

“Momentum lost, the 2014/15 league campaign can quickly be consigned to distant memory.”
