Former England captain and Everton striker Wayne Rooney has been charged with drink-driving, British police have confirmed.

The 31-year-old, who announced his retirement from international football last week, was stopped by police in Wilmslow, Cheshire in the northwest of England while driving a car.

"The man was arrested shortly after 2am (5am GST) today, Friday 1 September, after officers stopped a black VW Beetle," said a police statement.

Police said Mr Rooney "has since been charged with driving whilst over the prescribed limit."

The former Manchester United star was released on bail and will appear in court on September 18, the day after Everton take on the Red Devils at Old Trafford.

Mr Rooney returned to Goodison Park, his boyhood club in July, after 13 years at Manchester United on a free transfer.

During his time at Old Trafford, the club won five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, three League Cups, the Europa League and the 2008 Champions League.

Mr Rooney was seen on Friday afternoon arriving at his home in Prestbury, which is in the affluent area known as the Cheshire Golden Triangle, popular with footballers, celebrities and entrepreneurs.
