The match, the traditional curtain raiser to the European season, sees the Champions League winners from the previous season go up against the Europa League victors.
How they got there:
Liverpool won their sixth European Cup by beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the Champions League final in Madrid in June. Chelsea beat Arsenal 4-1 in the Europa League final in Baku in May. It was the first time both European finals were contested by four teams from the same country.
Team news:
The biggest absence will be seen in goal, with Liverpool without first-choice keeper Alisson Becker, who pulled up with a calf strain during the 4-1 win over West Ham United on the first day of the Premier League season. Adrian, who incidentally moved to Liverpool in the summer following his free transfer release from West Ham, looks set to deputise.
Senegalese forward Sadio Mane could be in line to start after his substitute appearance against West Ham. Mane has had a limited pre-season following his involvement with Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he led his nation to the final.
Centre-back Dejan Lovren is absent due to illness and did not travel with the squad. There are also concerns surrounding midfielder Naby Keita, who limped off during the training session on Tuesday.
