PSG 'better than us in every department' says Zinedine Zidane following Real Madrid defeat

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane criticised his players following a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, saying the French side were better than his players "in every department".

A first-half double from former Real winger Angel Di Maria and a Thomas Meunier strike in injury time saw PSG open their Champions League Group A account with a bang.

Real, record 13-times European champions, were overwhelmed, especially in midfield, and failed to muster a single shot on target at the Parc des Princes.

"Clearly they were better than us in every department - in the way they played, in midfield," Zidane told a news conference.

"What upset me is that we did not put enough intensity in the game and at that level of competition, it's not possible.

"They're good at creating chances, that's not what worries me. What worries me is that lack of intensity."

PSG controlled the game from midfield with Idrissa Gueye and Marco Verratti choking off Real's supply line with their high press.

"Failing to create proper chances with the players with have up front - Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Eden Hazard - is a weird feeling," said Zidane.

"You can play badly but if you have the intensity, if you fight for the ball, you're in the game," he added.

Di Maria, who spent four seasons at the Bernabeu, helping the Spanish club clinch the 2014 Champions League final with a man-of-the-match performance, opened the scoring as he burst into the area to connect with Juan Bernat's cross.

Gueye then drove through midfield to set up the Argentine for his second.

Meunier added the gloss at the death but it was Di Maria who had cleared the way, stepping into the gap left by the injured Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani as well as suspended Neymar.

"We can't be too surprised because he [Di Maria] has been showing for more than a year now that he is capable of performances like that," said PSG coach Thomas Tuchel. "He was exceptional tonight. He is always dangerous."
