Manchester City prepared for their Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk on Monday as news came in of striker Sergio Aguero getting ruled out for a considerable period due to thigh injury.

Manager Pep Guardiola revealed that Aguero is set to miss the Manchester derby on December 7 after limping off in the second half of Saturday’s 2-1 win over Chelsea.

“He will be out for a few games,” Guardiola said. “I don’t know exactly, but for a few weeks he will be out.”

When asked if Aguero, 31, will miss the derby, Guardiola said: “Yes. Maybe we will have a miracle but I don’t think so.”

Aguero's absence means a golden opportunity for Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus, who has scored five times this season but has started only on eight occasions due to the presence of Aguero.

Guardiola said Raheem Sterling could play up front as another option.

A draw or victory for Manchester City will ensure passage to the Champions League knockout stage.
