Luis Suarez will miss the rest of the season for Barcelona and could be a doubt for the start of Uruguay's Copa America bid after undergoing knee surgery.

Barcelona confirmed on Friday that Suarez had an operation on a medial meniscus issue in his right knee.

The expected recovery time is between four to six weeks.

That rules Suarez out of Barcelona's final two La Liga games, against Getafe on Sunday and at Eibar on May 18. But he will also miss the Copa del Rey final on May 25 against Valencia.

But the 32 year old faces a race against time for the Copa America in Brazil.

Uruguay are in Group C along with Ecuador, Japan and defending champions Chile.

Uruguay's opening game is on June 16 against Ecuador.
