A victory for Manchester United at Chelsea was always going to be highly improbable. United had lost seven and drawn one of their previous eight games at Stamford Bridge - by a distance their worst record at any opposing stadium.
On Saturday afternoon that statistic looked set to worsen as Maurizio Sarri’s unbeaten Chelsea team dominated the first half and deservedly led at half time.
Defeat and United would have trailed Chelsea by 10 points after only nine league games and been looking at their worst league start to a season since 1989-90, when the team eventually finished 13th.

But football can surprise and United did exactly that, with two second half goals from Anthony Martial. It was almost enough to win the game.
Jose Mourinho, provoked and embroiled in a touchline fracas at the end, deserves much credit. Though he usually opts for containment away to stronger opponents, he started with a side full of attacking players including Juan Mata, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial.
For Mata, it was a first league start in two months, a first in his preferred central role for eight months. Despite several candidates for the role, United have been desperately short of a link player.
Becoming that man at Chelsea away was a big ask, one where he would be required to break up play and quickly pick a pass for the forwards as United counter attacked, but Mata didn’t shirk the task.
Mourinho had only played the Spaniard in 45 out of a possible 450 minutes in his five games for United at Chelsea, the only club Mata has never defeated in the Premier League from 33 teams played. By the time he left the field, he looked like he had blown that statistic.
The Spaniard, 30, seldom let his manager down. Neat and tidy, he was also applauded by the Chelsea fans he served so well, usually as a No 10, when he went to take a second minute throw-in in front of the Matthew Harding Stand.
A minute later, Mata was unlucky when the referee got in his way to intercept a ball. He complained, the referee shrugged. There would be plenty more for him to dispute.
Mata was quietly effective throughout. He nicked the ball off Willian after seven minutes, turning a Chelsea attack into a United attack.
Playing behind Lukaku, he won the ball back again after 12 minutes, but United were behind after nine minutes later when Antonio Rudiger escaped Pogba from a corner to head past David de Gea. Pogba remonstrated with Victor Lindelof in anger over the mix up, De Gea shook his head.
It was the fourth time United had conceded from a corner in 12 games this season. Not for the first time in their atrocious run at Stamford Bridge, United started as brightly in the autumnal London sunshine. Not for the first time, they had gone behind and deserved to be trailing at half-time.
Fortunes improved in the second half and United were level after 54 minutes when Martial volleyed in from close range after a fine touch from Rashford. Mata’s cross to the back post after his shot was saved was key.
Chelsea pushed back and De Gea dived in the 70th minute to save from N'Golo Kante, but on 72 minutes, Mata beat David Luiz for pace, combined with Rashford and set up Martial for his second. The Parisien, another who has wanted more opportunities, didn’t let his manager down either.
Mata was taken off two minutes after Martial’s double, the Spaniard fully deserving of his applause from both the delighted 3,000 travelling fans and the home fans, magnanimous even though their side were now losing.
He had never stopped chasing, closing opponents down and he received a booking for his trouble before he was replaced by his close friend and sometime scourge of Chelsea, Ander Herrera, to see the game out, six minutes of added on time for the second period. They came close, but Chelsea equalised from substitute Ross Barkley after 95 minutes.
Mata, Mourinho’s best passer, is most effective in the centre rather than on the wing. He deserves to stay there as United face tough games against Juventus, Bournemouth and Manchester City.
Mourinho will have loved the "Jose Mourinho" chants from the United fans who continue to back him, less so being chided by Chelsea fans where he won three Premier League titles – a point he was keen to make to them at the end.
It was his side, though, who really made a point and earned one, too.

Dubai works towards better air quality by 2021
Dubai is on a mission to record good air quality for 90 per cent of the year – up from 86 per cent annually today – by 2021.
The municipality plans to have seven mobile air-monitoring stations by 2020 to capture more accurate data in hourly and daily trends of pollution.
These will be on the Palm Jumeirah, Al Qusais, Muhaisnah, Rashidiyah, Al Wasl, Al Quoz and Dubai Investment Park.
“It will allow real-time responding for emergency cases,” said Khaldoon Al Daraji, first environment safety officer at the municipality.
“We’re in a good position except for the cases that are out of our hands, such as sandstorms.
“Sandstorms are our main concern because the UAE is just a receiver.
“The hotspots are Iran, Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq, but we’re working hard with the region to reduce the cycle of sandstorm generation.”
Mr Al Daraji said monitoring as it stood covered 47 per cent of Dubai.
There are 12 fixed stations in the emirate, but Dubai also receives information from monitors belonging to other entities.
“There are 25 stations in total,” Mr Al Daraji said.
“We added new technology and equipment used for the first time for the detection of heavy metals.
“A hundred parameters can be detected but we want to expand it to make sure that the data captured can allow a baseline study in some areas to ensure they are well positioned.”

The more you save, the sooner you can retire. Tuan Phan, a board member of SimplyFI.com, says if you save just 5 per cent of your salary, you can expect to work for another 66 years before you are able to retire without too large a drop in income.
In other words, you will not save enough to retire comfortably. If you save 15 per cent, you can forward to another 43 working years. Up that to 40 per cent of your income, and your remaining working life drops to just 22 years. (see table)
Obviously, this is only a rough guide. How much you save will depend on variables, not least your salary and how much you already have in your pension pot. But it shows what you need to do to achieve financial independence.

Retirement funds heavily invested in equities at a risky time
Pension funds in growing economies in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East have a sharply higher percentage of assets parked in stocks, just at a time when trade tensions threaten to derail markets.
Retirement money managers in 14 geographies now allocate 40 per cent of their assets to equities, an 8 percentage-point climb over the past five years, according to a Mercer survey released last week that canvassed government, corporate and mandatory pension funds with almost $5 trillion in assets under management. That compares with about 25 per cent for pension funds in Europe.
The escalating trade spat between the US and China has heightened fears that stocks are ripe for a downturn. With tensions mounting and outcomes driven more by politics than economics, the S&P 500 Index will be on course for a “full-scale bear market” without Federal Reserve interest-rate cuts, Citigroup’s global macro strategy team said earlier this week.
The increased allocation to equities by growth-market pension funds has come at the expense of fixed-income investments, which declined 11 percentage points over the five years, according to the survey.
Hong Kong funds have the highest exposure to equities at 66 per cent, although that’s been relatively stable over the period. Japan’s equity allocation jumped 13 percentage points while South Korea’s increased 8 percentage points.
The money managers are also directing a higher portion of their funds to assets outside of their home countries. On average, foreign stocks now account for 49 per cent of respondents’ equity investments, 4 percentage points higher than five years ago, while foreign fixed-income exposure climbed 7 percentage points to 23 per cent. Funds in Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan are among those seeking greater diversification in stocks and fixed income.

Tax authority targets shisha levy evasion
The Federal Tax Authority will track shisha imports with electronic markers to protect customers and ensure levies have been paid.
Khalid Ali Al Bustani, director of the tax authority, on Sunday said the move is to "prevent tax evasion and support the authority’s tax collection efforts".
The scheme’s first phase, which came into effect on 1st January, 2019, covers all types of imported and domestically produced and distributed cigarettes. As of May 1, importing any type of cigarettes without the digital marks will be prohibited.
He said the latest phase will see imported and locally produced shisha tobacco tracked by the final quarter of this year.
"The FTA also maintains ongoing communication with concerned companies, to help them adapt their systems to meet our requirements and coordinate between all parties involved," he said.
As with cigarettes, shisha was hit with a 100 per cent tax in October 2017, though manufacturers and cafes absorbed some of the costs to prevent prices doubling.

Credit Score explained
What is a credit score?
In the UAE your credit score is a number generated by the Al Etihad Credit Bureau (AECB), which represents your credit worthiness – in other words, your risk of defaulting on any debt repayments. In this country, the number is between 300 and 900. A low score indicates a higher risk of default, while a high score indicates you are a lower risk.
Why is it important?
Financial institutions will use it to decide whether or not you are a credit risk. Those with better scores may also receive preferential interest rates or terms on products such as loans, credit cards and mortgages.
How is it calculated?
The AECB collects information on your payment behaviour from banks as well as utilitiy and telecoms providers.
How can I improve my score?
By paying your bills on time and not missing any repayments, particularly your loan, credit card and mortgage payments. It is also wise to limit the number of credit card and loan applications you make and to reduce your outstanding balances.
How do I know if my score is low or high?
By checking it. Visit one of AECB’s Customer Happiness Centres with an original and valid Emirates ID, passport copy and valid email address. Liv. customers can also access the score directly from the banking app.
How much does it cost?
A credit report costs Dh100 while a report with the score included costs Dh150. Those only wanting the credit score pay Dh60. VAT is payable on top.

How to apply for a drone permit
- Individuals must register on UAE Drone app or website using their UAE Pass
- Add all their personal details, including name, nationality, passport number, Emiratis ID, email and phone number
- Upload the training certificate from a centre accredited by the GCAA
- Submit their request
What are the regulations?
- Fly it within visual line of sight
- Never over populated areas
- Ensure maximum flying height of 400 feet (122 metres) above ground level is not crossed
- Users must avoid flying over restricted areas listed on the UAE Drone app
- Only fly the drone during the day, and never at night
- Should have a live feed of the drone flight

Countries offering golden visas
UK
Innovator Founder Visa is aimed at those who can demonstrate relevant experience in business and sufficient investment funds to set up and scale up a new business in the UK. It offers permanent residence after three years.
Germany
Investing or establishing a business in Germany offers you a residence permit, which eventually leads to citizenship. The investment must meet an economic need and you have to have lived in Germany for five years to become a citizen.
Italy
The scheme is designed for foreign investors committed to making a significant contribution to the economy. Requires a minimum investment of €250,000 which can rise to €2 million.
Switzerland
Residence Programme offers residence to applicants and their families through economic contributions. The applicant must agree to pay an annual lump sum in tax.
Canada
Start-Up Visa Programme allows foreign entrepreneurs the opportunity to create a business in Canada and apply for permanent residence.

Zakat definitions
Zakat: an Arabic word meaning ‘to cleanse’ or ‘purification’.
Nisab: the minimum amount that a Muslim must have before being obliged to pay zakat. Traditionally, the nisab threshold was 87.48 grams of gold, or 612.36 grams of silver. The monetary value of the nisab therefore varies by current prices and currencies.
Zakat Al Mal: the ‘cleansing’ of wealth, as one of the five pillars of Islam; a spiritual duty for all Muslims meeting the ‘nisab’ wealth criteria in a lunar year, to pay 2.5 per cent of their wealth in alms to the deserving and needy.
Zakat Al Fitr: a donation to charity given during Ramadan, before Eid Al Fitr, in the form of food. Every adult Muslim who possesses food in excess of the needs of themselves and their family must pay two qadahs (an old measure just over 2 kilograms) of flour, wheat, barley or rice from each person in a household, as a minimum.
