First win for David Moyes at Everton since he left as manager

  EVERTON RATINGS: Jordan Pickford – 5: First save on the hour from Cresswell’s whipped free kick, which he dealt with in typically flamboyant fashion. Good save from Soucek, although couldn’t do anything about goal moments later. AP

  Seamus Coleman – 6: Captain continues his recovery from injury, which is a plus (when not many). Not at marauding best, but got further forward as match progressed, including shot at Randolph in second half. AFP

  Mason Holgate – 5: Looked steady enough in spells, and then got into trouble at times with some sloppy play. Didn’t have much to threaten him until Antonio’s introduction, which jolted him into life. EPA

  Yerry Mina – 5: Almost the same as his partner in central defence, minus the wayward passing – for the majority. Would have feared the worst when Antonio surged pass him late on, but provided enough pressure to put him off. EPA

  Ben Godfrey – 4: Has impressed a lot this season at left-back, but after a promising opening did not supply much going forward – when offering something in attack seemed to be his remit. Pretty nondescript. AP

  Abdoulaye Doucoure – 5: Prowled the midfield and was neat and tidy for the most part, without offering genuine bite. Should have played in Coleman better late on, therefore wasting a rare opportunity for the hosts. Reuters

  Tom Davies – 4: Slipped early on as shot, which kind of set the tone for him (and the match). Booked towards end of game for scissors challenge on Antonio, then misplaced a simple pass. Only real contributions of note. EPA

  Bernard – 5: Fine chest and volley from edge of box, only for Randolph to parry for corner. That the game’s first shot arrived on 45 minutes said everything you needed to know. Subbed off on 65 minutes. EPA

  Gylfi Sigurdsson – 4: Wasteful with a free-kick late in first half, in which he over-hit, and largely ineffectual throughout. As the man chosen principally to unlock West Ham, he failed big time. Subbed just after the hour. AP

  Richarlison – 4: Another one expected to provide the home side with an attacking thrust, he was completely blunted. Started on the right, then reverted to his usual place on the opposite flank. Didn’t make any difference whatsoever. AP

  Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 3: Good memories of playing West Ham since scored a cup hat-trick against them, but had no decent chances, while hold-up play not good enough. Subbed off on 79 minutes - now six games without a goal. PA

  SUBS: Gomes – 5: Introduced alongside James just after the hour to provide a spark, and had a couple nice touches. An improvement on Sigurdsson, at least. AP

  James Rodriguez – 5: Some nice delivery when brought on, but didn’t influence proceedings as much as his talent should have permitted. Everton will be glad to have him back available, though. AP

  Cenk Tosun – 5: Not enough time to really have an effect, but maybe would have expected to be called upon earlier. Did well to very nearly set up Richarlison. Nearly. AP

  WEST HAM RATINGS: Darren Randolph – 6: Late start after Lucasz Fabianski picked up injury during warm-up and then took clean sheet on first Premier League appearance of season. Won’t have too many easier nights, in fairness. AFP

  Vladimir Coufal – 6: Was one of West Ham’s chief (sole?) threats going forward in the first half, and crossing generally OK. Less of impact after the break, but part of an away side who kept a clean sheet. AP

  Craig Dawson – 6: Would have feared the worst when he went down following his own miscontrol in the 17th minute. Spent two minutes out of action, but returned to help man the defence in keeping the hosts at bay. Solid, if anything. AP

  Angelo Ogbonna – 7: Probably the visitors’ best performer. Blocked well early on, while displayed great positioning to hack or head clear when needed. An overall commanding presence. Deserved to be on winning side. Getty

  Aaron Cresswell – 6: Good early crossing, but retreated as match wore on although shot-cum-cross created the goal. One stat of note: made 200th Premier League start for West Ham, joining only Mark Noble. So there’s that. AP

  Declan Rice – 7: Captained the side well, diligent and tidy in possession. Played a lovely ball across goal from clever free-kick at the start of second half, which deserved to be finished. A calming presence. AP

  Tomas Soucek – 7: Started well, good going forward and in intercepting Everton’s attempts to build momentum. Struck the winner on 85 minutes to emphasise his knack of getting in box, when directed home Cresswell’s shot. Reuters

  Jarrod Bowen – 6: Was arguably the one bright spot for West Ham in the first half, as his trickery and invention caused hosts what could generously be described as problems. Faded, and subbed on 73 minutes. AFP

  Pablo Fornals – 4: Input can be distilled to a clumsy tackle on Bernard, a decent half-volley from range, and a completely mistimed header from Bowen’s cross when should’ve done better. Off on 73 minutes. AFP

  Said Benrahma – 4: As one of the most talented players on the pitch, you would have expected more from the attacking midfielder. David Moyes presumably would have, too. Crafty play at times, but final ball let him down too often. PA

  Sebastien Haller – 5: The target man was pretty non-existent, however, through no real fault of his own. Made to drop deeper to get involved, and eventually subbed just before the hour – probably not too bothered. AP

  SUBS: Michail Antonio – 6: On for Haller on 59 minutes, an incredibly welcome sight, for the match, and West Ham’s season. Took all of five minutes to force Pickford into action and was a menace from then on. Getty

  Manuel Lanzini – 5: Not really enough time to have much of an impact, but did shoot over from a tight angle in injury-time following Antonio’s surging run. Defended well at the death. AP

  Andriy Yarmolenko – 6: Played big part in the winner, when his beautifully clipped ball set up Soucek, whose shot was saved well by Pickford before he scoring seconds later. AP

A late rocket from Tomas Soucek gave West Ham a 1-0 win at Everton in the first Premier League game of 2021 that had been short on fireworks until the Czech midfielder's deserved winner in the 86th minute.

The Hammers lost goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski to injury during the warm-up but his replacement Darren Randolph barely had a save to make as Everton struggled to break down their defence.

West Ham wasted some decent chances until Soucek struck late, first forcing Jordan Pickford to parry a shot before reacting quickest to steer home Aaron Cresswell's deflected effort for a goal that gave West Ham boss David Moyes his first victory at Goodison Park since leaving Everton in 2013.

The victory leaves West Ham 10th in the standings with 26 points while Everton, who could have gone second with a win, remain in fourth spot on 29 points.
