Bayern Munich laid down a marker to their fellow Uefa Champions League contenders with a clinical 7-1 demolition of Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday night.

Roma came into the game full of confidence, having won all but one of their Serie A games this season – the loss being a controversial defeat at Juventus – and after taking a point at Manchester City in their last Group E game.

But they were taken apart in a similar manner to Germany’s 7-1 thrashing of Brazil at the World Cup, which featured several players from Bayern’s team.

Roma sprang out of the blocks, but it took an Arjen Robben-inspired Bayern just nine minutes to go ahead when the winger cut inside left-back Ashley Cole and curled a shot into the top corner.

Then followed a goal glut with Mario Gotze, Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller and Robben again all scoring within the space of 13 minutes to leave Roma in disarray at the break.

Gervinho pulled one back for Roma, but Franck Ribery and Xherdan Shaqiri made it 7-1.

It marked the second time Roma coach Rudi Garcia had suffered such a fate at the German giants’ hands – his Lille side conceded five in the first half en route to a 6-1 defeat at Munich in 2012/13 as Bayern went on to win the trophy.

And yet Bayern were outdone by Shakhtar Donetsk, who went one better by leading 6-0 at half time away to BATE Borisov in Belarus in Group H. It ended 7-0, with Brazilian Luiz Adriano scoring five goals.
