UAE manager Bert van Marwijk has kept faith with influential Emirati midfielder Omar Abdulrahman by naming him in his 27-player squad for their 2022 World Cup opener against Malaysia.
Abdulrahman missed the Asian Cup, which the UAE hosted at the start of the year after suffering a knee injury while playing for Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal in October.
The 2016 Asian Player of the Year moved to Saudi Arabia last season after a decade at Al Ain, but he has returned to the Arabian Gulf League for the upcoming season after joining Al Jazira on a free transfer.
The UAE squad will travel to Bahrain on Saturday for the penultimate phase of their preparation before facing Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur on September 10 for their Group G opener. The national team, seeded first in the group, will also take on Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia during the group phase.
The UAE play two friendly matches during their camp in Bahrain. They face Sri Lanka on August 30 and meet the Dominican Republic the following day before returning to the country.
“The final phase of our preparation will be in Malaysia’s Bukit Jalil stadium from September 4 until the match day,” said Ismail Rashid, the team manager.
“We had the first phase of our preparation in Salzburg from July 13-21, and the technical committee has now got a good idea of the squad that’s being prepared for our first qualifying game.
“We have a lot of experienced players in the squad and we are confident that they are physically and mentally well-prepared for the upcoming qualifying games.
“The first game, as always, is very important. A good result can do a world of good to the confidence of the players.
“The technical staff will give the final touches during the camp in Bahrain and then we are ready to face our first opponent.”
The UAE have entered Asia's 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign in the second round. If they win the group or finish as one of the four best runners-up of the eight groups, they advance to the third round, while also booking their place at the 2023 Asian Cup.

It’ll be summer in the city as car show tries to move with the times
If 2008 was the year that rocked Detroit, 2019 will be when Motor City gives its annual car extravaganza a revamp that aims to move with the times.
A major change is that this week's North American International Auto Show will be the last to be held in January, after which the event will switch to June.
The new date, organisers said, will allow exhibitors to move vehicles and activities outside the Cobo Center's halls and into other city venues, unencumbered by cold January weather, exemplified this week by snow and ice.
In a market in which trends can easily be outpaced beyond one event, the need to do so was probably exacerbated by the decision of Germany's big three carmakers – BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi – to skip the auto show this year.
The show has long allowed car enthusiasts to sit behind the wheel of the latest models at the start of the calendar year but a more fluid car market in an online world has made sales less seasonal.
Similarly, everyday technology seems to be catching up on those whose job it is to get behind microphones and try and tempt the visiting public into making a purchase.
Although sparkly announcers clasp iPads and outline the technical gadgetry hidden beneath bonnets, people's obsession with their own smartphones often appeared to offer a more tempting distraction.
“It's maddening,” said one such worker at Nissan's stand.
The absence of some pizzazz, as well as top marques, was also noted by patrons.
“It looks like there are a few less cars this year,” one annual attendee said of this year's exhibitors.
“I can't help but think it's easier to stay at home than to brave the snow and come here.”

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
