  2019 - exit at last-16 stage (Aggregate 3-3, Manchester United advance on away goals). After winning the first leg 2-0 at Old Trafford, PSG were heavy favourites to get the job done back on home soil in the return leg. However, a brace from Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku followed by a controversial last-minute Marcus Rashford penalty after a VAR review sent the English side through to the Champions League quarter-finals.   2018 - last 16 (lose to Real Madrid 5-2 on aggregate) A 3-1 defeat at the Bernabeu left the French champions with a mountain to climb in the second leg. That job got even harder after Marco Verratti was sent off in the 66th minute at the Parc des Princes with PSG already trailing to a Cristiano Ronaldo goal. Edinson Cavani’s strike made it 1-1 on the night before Casemiro scored an 80th minute winner. AFP

  2017 - last 16 (lose to Barcelona 6-5 on aggregate) The greatest comeback in the tournament’s history. PSG looked to have finally signaled their title credentials as they took a 4-0 lead to Barcelona after blitzing Lionel Messi and Co in the first leg. What unfolded at the Camp Nou will live long in the memory. Barca got to work quickly, with Messi’s second-half penalty putting them 3-0 up on the night. Cavani’s strike looked to have given the Parisians the breathing room they needed to resist the Barca onslaught, and even as Neymar stroked home a penalty in the 91st minute to make it 5-5 on aggregate, it was PSG who stood to go through on away goals. Then Sergi Roberto brought the stadium to its knees with a goal in the fifth minute of injury time. It was cruel on PSG, but capped the most amazing comeback in living memory from Barcelona. AFP

  2016 - quarter-finals (lose 3-2 on aggregate to Manchester City) Again PSG looked to have done the hard work in the first leg by scoring twice at the Etihad Stadium to earn a 2-2 draw.   2015 - quarter-finals (lose 5-1 on aggregate to Barcelona) The tie was effectively over by the time the teams arrived at Camp Nou for the return leg after goals from Neymar and Luis Suarez (2) sealed a 3-1 victory for Barca at Parc des Princes. Barca won the second leg at Camp Nou thanks to a Neymar double. AFP

  2014 - quarter-finals (Aggregate 3-3, Chelsea advance on away goals) Demba Ba's scrambled late goal sent Chelsea into the Champions League semi-finals at Paris St-Germain's expense - and sparked a familiar touchline celebration from delighted Blues boss Jose Mourinho. Chelsea needed to claw back PSG's 3-1 advantage from the first leg and Andre Schurrle gave them hope with a first-half goal. Paris Saint-Germain's latest Uefa Champions League exit has left the club perplexed and searching for answers of how they can land European club football's greatest prize.

The French champions blew a 2-0 advantage in their last-16 second leg match against Manchester United in Paris on Wednesday, crashing out on away goals after being beaten 3-1 at the Parc des Princes.

PSG have spent a fortune on assembling a team capable of winning Europe's elite club competition, but have failed to get past the quarter-final stages since being taken over by big-spending Qatar Sports Investments in 2011.

"I'm very disappointed with the result and the game. I don't understand how we lost," club president Nasser Al Khelaifi said. "We won 2-0 there. Here in Paris we lost 3-1. We gave them everything to win. It was easy for them. I don't understand."

Over the past seven seasons, the big-spending Parisians have three times bowed out at the last-16 stage and four times in the quarter-finals.
