How they got here
Atletico Madrid
Progressed to the last-16 stage after topping Group C with 13 points ahead of Benfica, conceding just three goals in six matches. A penalty shoot-out was required after 210 minutes of football could not separate them and PSV Eindhoven, with Atletico prevailing 8-7. After losing 2-1 to Barcelona at Camp Nou, Diego Simeone's side won the return leg at Vicente Calderon 2-0 to advance to the semi-finals 3-2 on aggregate.

Bayern Munich
The winners of Group F suffered just one defeat against five resounding wins – including a 5-1 hammering of Arsenal and a 5-0 hurting dished out to Dynamo Zagreb. Juventus awaited in the last 16 and the Italians took the tie to extra time in the second leg after both matches had finished 2-2, Bayern eventually running out 4-2 winners, 6-4 on aggregate. A 1-0 home win over Benfica and a 2-2 draw in Lisbon secured Bayern's place in the last four.
Key players
Atletico Madrid
Antoine Griezmann. The young Frenchman proved in the quarter-final second leg that he is as clinical a finisher as any of Barcelona's verited triumvirate. His first-half header levelled the tie and he showed nerves of steel to convert the penalty that clinched their semi-final place.
Bayern Munich
Douglas Costa. The Brazilian winger is as quick as they come and a danger down either flank. A creator and scorer of spectacular goals and a player who has added a new dimension to the all-conquering German champions' attacking style.
