As Nigeria’s Brown Ideye sits, West Brom manager offers explanation

West Bromwich Albion manager Alan Irvine said in a Tuesday newspaper interview that he is willing to explain to club-record signing Brown Ideye why he has been dropped.

Nigeria striker Ideye has scored only once since his £10 million (Dh58.7m) transfer from Dynamo Kiev and was left out of the squad for West Brom’s 1-0 win at Leicester City on Saturday.

“The way that we do it is, I say to any player, ‘If you want to come in on Monday, come in on Monday’,” Irvine told local newspaper the Wolverhampton Express and Star.

“But when the team’s named and the subs are named, they have to accept that, respect the rest of the players, and then come back in later if they want to have a chat.

“I might have a chat with him if he feels he needs to have a chat, but if he doesn’t then I won’t be calling him in.”

Ideye has made only two Premier League starts for West Brom since arriving during the close season, but Irvine says his omission at Leicester was for purely tactical reasons.

“We pick the team carefully, even if it’s the same team,” said Irvine, who had Victor Anichebe and Georgios Samaras on the bench at the King Power Stadium.

“It’s still chosen with a lot of thought and care – that applies to the subs as well. What we knew was that Leicester had a physical presence. Generally, I have two centre-forwards on the bench.

“I decided that I needed physical options there rather than somebody like Brown, whose strengths are running in behind. That’s why I went for Victor and Sami.”
