Arsenal top Man United, leapfrog Spurs; Liverpool win trophy – EPL predictions

  • English
  • Arabic

Each week, The National Sports Editor Thomas Woods predicts the outcomes of the English Premier League, this week seeing a win for Arsenal and a trophy for Liverpool. Here are his results for the season.

Manchester United 0 Arsenal 1

Why? Arsenal have a chance to make a statement in the title race here and United are there for the taking. They've not performed well recently and will have played on Thursday in the Europa League. Look to Arsenal to put in a similar performance to the one when they went to Manchester City last season and won 2-0. Aaron Ramsey could be an important player here. United's back four will handle Olivier Giroud, but Ramsey makes late runs into the box and can catch the home midfield out.

West Ham 2 Sunderland 0

Why? Sunderland beat Manchester United at home in their last match, but their away form has been terrible this season. Nine defeats and only eight points taken on the road. West Ham have had an up-and-down last five games, but Dmitri Payet, their key man at the start of the season, is getting back to top form since his injury. They have too much for Sunderland.

Leicester City 1 Norwich City 0

Why? I've a feeling Leicester will draw at blank at some point in their upcoming run of home games – Norwich, West Brom and Newcastle. All teams who are inclined to sit back and aim to negate the home side's rapid counter-attacking game. But, that said, Norwich are in such a rut that it won't be them who take points from the King Power Stadium.

Southampton 0 Chelsea 0

Why? Southampton are the form team in the Premier League, with 16 points from their last six games. Chelsea are fourth in that table. With the home side keeping six clean sheets in a row, and Chelsea drawing six of their last nine, it points to a stalemate, especially with the visitors having an eye on their Champions League tie against PSG four days later

Stoke City 2 Aston Villa 0

Why? Stoke just lost three games in a row by 3-0 scorelines, before winning 3-1 at Bournemouth. but their season has been like this, major ups and downs in form. The way to get back-to-back victories and return to form is by facing the side with the worst away record in the league.

Watford 2 Bourneouth 1

Why? Bournemouth have the worst defensive record outside the bottom four and it is hard to see them keeping Watford's strike duo of Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney quiet. That is the key to beating this Watford side. The pair have 22 league league goals between them. Only four other players have even found the scoresheet.

West Brom 0 Crystal Palace 1

Why? Palace got a major boost in the return of Yannick Bolasie from injury last week. His importance for them became apparent when he missed almost two months through injury and his side tumbled down the table. At one point they had the worst form guide in Europe. He and Emmanuel Adebayor will win this one.

Tottenham 1 Swansea City 1

Why? This is where the wheels might come off for Tottenham, now that they are considered major title contenders. The FA Cup defeat at home to Crystal Palace showed Swansea the way to success at White Hart Lane, where Spurs have dropped the most points of the top three. This coupled with a Europa League game on Thursday and Swansea's relegation fight means a draw is a high possibility.

BONUS – League Cup final

Manchester City 1 Liverpool 2

Why? Unlike some finals, this one should have goals. Neither side can defend, although City do have Vincent Kompany back fit. But this game will be all about the strikers. Sergio Aguero is the only City player in any sort of form, whereas Liverpool might be able to play Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge AND Philippe Coutinho in attack. Deadly.
