Olivier Giroud slotted home the winner as Arsenal won Sunday's Community Shield after Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and striker Alvaro Morata missed penalties in a 4-1 shootout result at Wembley.

The season curtain-raiser between Premier League champions Chelsea and FA Cup winners Arsenal finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.

An English football first followed as the 'ABBA' penalty shootout was deployed and the Gunners extended their winning record at Wembley to nine straight games, including two in penalty shootouts.

MAN OF THE MATCH

New full-time Chelsea captain Gary Cahill showed why he remains one of England's best centre-backs - leading his defence well as they kept Arsenal new-boy Alexandre Lacazette quiet. His no-nonsense approach saw him in the wars, as well as leaving both Per Mertesacker and team-mate David Luiz floored. Cahill also stepped up to slam home the first penalty of the shootout, the only Chelsea player to hit a successful spot-kick.

DATA POINT

This was the first time in English football that the new 'ABBA' penalty shootout format was followed. The system is based on the format used in tennis tie-breaks, with the team taking the first kick in each pair of kicks alternating, so AB BA ABBA and so on instead of AB AB AB AB. Arsenal were therefore the first team to take consecutive penalties and it worked a treat for the Gunners, who converted all four spot-kicks to win 4-1.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had the confidence to take the Chelsea's second penalty in the shootout but the Belgian goalkeeper blazed his effort high and wide over the Wembley crossbar and into the jubilant Arsenal fans. It proved to be a costly miss as - with new-boy Alvaro Morata only able to hit the post with his effort - Chelsea slipped to defeat against Arsenal at Wembley once again.
