Al Jazira avoided a shock defeat at Hatta yesterday after second half goals from Ahmed Al Hashmi and Romarinho ensured the Arabian Gulf League (AGL) champions registered their second win of the season.
After a season that saw Jazira clinch the AGL title with a record number of wins in the professional era, the start to this campaign has been somewhat of a struggle, having won just once from their opening five games.
There was a danger Jazira were going to slip to their third defeat of the season after Hatta's Maher Jassem had cancelled out Khalfan Mubarak 28th minute goal for Jazira, and Fernando Gabriel put the hosts in front a minute into the second half.
However, Jazira swiftly responded through Al Hashmi before Brazilian forward Romarinho scored the winner 22 minutes from time to ensure the champions left the Hamdan bin Rashid Stadium with all three points.
The victory lifts Jazira to fifth in the AGL table, although eight teams are still to play their Round 6 matches.
In yesterday's later game, Al Wasl moved to the top of the table with a 3-2 win over Dibba at the Zabeel Stadium.
Dibba struck first when Khalifa Al Shayary found the net in the fifth minute and the visitors held that lead for most of the first half until Fabio de Lima equalised moments before the interval.
Wasl were made to work hard but they eventually broke Dibba’s stubborn defence with two goals in four minutes midway through the second half.
Humaid Abdulla put the home side ahead and Caio Canedo fired the other to hand Wasl a two-goal cushion.
Dibba ensured an anxious few moments for Wasl when Senegalese forward Alassane Diallo scored from the penalty spot in added time but Wasl managed to see out the win.
Today's fixtures see Al Dhafra host Al Nasr in the early kick-off at 5.05pm before Al Wahda travel to Shabab Al Ahli Dubai for a clash between two sides toward the top of the table.
Al Wahda will miss the services of Hungary captain Balazs Dzsiudzsak and Salem Sultan when they travel to Rashid stadium, although manager Laurentiu Reghecampf has insisted victory is the only thing on his players' minds.
“This is a key game for both teams as we are in the top four in the league at this early stage of the competition,” said Reghecampf.
“We are travelling with the intentions of returning with the three points as usual.”
On Saturday, Ajman host Emirates before Al Ain welcome Sharjah to the Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium. A victory for the Garden City club will see them reclaim top spot.

A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.

Route 2: online platform

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
