Arsenal slip up against battling Everton as they fail to take advantage of Liverpool draw

Gunners goalless as Newcastle put four past Van Nistelrooy's Leicester and Ipswich beat fellow strugglers Wolves

Arsenal failed to capitalise on Liverpool dropping points against Fulham as Mikel Arteta's side were held by strugglers Everton at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The Gunners could only manage a draw 1-1 at Fulham six days ago and again took just a point as Sean Dyche’s battlers clung on for a goalless draw at the Emirates.

The north Londoners have scored 23 goals from corners since the start of last season as they have become a force to be reckoned with at set-pieces.

But their lack of goals from open play has come under fire this season and once again they failed to convert pressure and possession into goals.

Mikel Arteta’s side sit six points behind Liverpool, having played a game more, with the Reds twice coming from behind in a 2-2 draw at Anfield.

After the match Arsenal boss Arteta told Sky Sports: “Very disappointing not to win the game. We fully deserved to win the game.

“We conceded no shots. We dominated play. When we generated big chances we didn’t score a goal. Look at the intensity of what we generated in the second half.

“[Frustrating] especially when we concede zero [chances] and dominate the game so much.”

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford said: “It's about how we apply ourselves – stick to the game plan and suffer. We suffered a lot without the ball. We dug a point out.

“Two defeats in 10 or 11. The discipline is there. Against Arsenal you'd smash and grab a point all day long.

“I made some good saves at good times. The lads made some brilliant blocks. A good performance from everyone.”

Ipswich beat Wolves 2-1 at Molineux to record just their second win of the season and push Gary O’Neil closer to the brink.

Matheus Cunha’s 72nd-minute equaliser looked to have saved Wolves from defeat against their fellow strugglers but Taylor was left free to head in from a corner in the fourth minute of time added on, sparking jubilant celebrations for the visitors and angry recriminations amongst Wolves players.

Rayan Ait-Nouri had to be ushered down the tunnel after the final whistle and was shown a red card as arguments broke out within the home ranks and boos rang down from the stands.

Ipswich matchwinner Taylor said after the match: “We played really well in the first half and then they came back into it. I am really happy to have got the winning touch.

“I was told to come on and try and impact the game and try and calm the game down because it was a little but hectic. I have a little knack for goals so I am glad to have got that one today.

“We normally take each game as it comes but getting the win today I would like to take momentum into the next one.”

Jacob Murphy scored twice as Newcastle rediscovered their killer touch to condemn new Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy to a first defeat.

Murphy rounded off a brilliantly worked set-piece to open the scoring and, after Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak had put the game out of sight, made it 4-0 on the hour mark.

Guimaraes told BBC Match of the Day: “I think we stepped up in this game. It was a massive win. The team played well, especially in the second half.

“I am very happy to score again. I have been trying for a long, long time, but I wasn't lucky. But very happy for today and we need to keep going. We have a massive game on Wednesday.”

Leicester manager Van Nistelrooy said: “It was hard. It was 1-0 at half-time. We were a bit lucky not to be down by more goals. It's costly when you concede in such standard set-piece situations. Then it was going to be hard to turn it around.

“We know how intense Newcastle players are and the intensity in which they play. A lot of the chances they created were form our ball losses and they got quick in the counter-attack. We kept going and trying, but we have to take this one on the chin and move on.”
