Brazilian sent off as United are held at Old Trafford

MANCHESTER UNITED RATINGS: David de Gea, 7 - Busy afternoon – 18 goal attempts to contend with. Early stop from Walker-Peters and big save from Walcott on 25. Wrong-footed by a deflected Ward-Prowse free-kick. Another free-kick from the same player skimmed the cross bar, then a Walker-Peters shot smashed the post. EPA

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, 6 - Well beaten on 20 as Southampton attacked. Gave a ball away needlessly after 62 and gave the ball away to set up a Southampton attack a minute later. Super ball forward on 83 after winning it back. Cleared an effort on his goal line, too. AP

Raphael Varane, 8 - Won everything. Blocked a dangerous attack on 20, then nearly scored at the other end off a Fernandes free-kick. AFP

Lisandro Martinez, 8 - Booked after nine minutes. Slid across to stop a Saints attack and showed the spirit United needed when down to ten. AP

Luke Shaw, 8 - Quality first-half crosses. Got into an attacking position to receive an Antony ball on 62, but heavy first touch was that of a defender and not an attacker against the club where he made his debut aged 16. Booked in the 95th minute to stop another Saints’ attack. AP

Casemiro, 4 - Sent off the second time at Old Trafford in six weeks, this time for dangerous play, even though his foot went to the ball. Whatever the circumstances he simply can’t be getting sent off so often and costing his team so heavily. He’d never been sent off before moving to England. AFP

Bruno Fernandes, 7 - Wonderful balls to Rashford in a 16th minute attack and shot over on 27. His ball appeared to be handled by Bella-Kotchap, but the referee didn’t award a penalty and VAR didn’t even flag it. Shot pushed to the inside of the post on 67 – the closest United had come to scoring. AP

Antony, 5 - Set up Fernandes for a shot on 27, then appealed for a yellow card when he was fouled soon after. Quick feet in a very entertaining draw, but not enough. EPA

Jadon Sancho, 6 - Slipped a 16th minute pass to Rashford but didn’t impose himself enough on the game. AP

Marcus Rashford, 6 - Excellent combination play with Fernandes to open up Southampton on 16 and have a shot on goal. Touch let him down when set up by Sancho soon after. Went down - without being touched - but appealed for a penalty on 74. Getty

Wout Weghorst, 5 - Was desperate for an early ball from Rashford. Did get a 31st minute cross to his head, but the header was weak. Brought off after 44 minutes for tactical reasons following Casemiro’s red. Getty

SUBS: Scott McTominay, 7 - On for Weghorst after 44 and almost put the ball in his own goal after 49. Fine ball to Pellistri on 85 and sharp turn in another attack soon after. Defended well. AP

Alejandro Garnacho, NR - On for Sancho after 74. Ran on goal on 80 but was brought down in a fair tackle and seemed to be going off in agony. Yet he continued, unconvincingly, for another 11 minutes. PA

SOUTHAMPTON RATINGS: Gavin Bazunu, 9 – Another fine performance from the Saints goalkeeper who twice denied the formidable Rashford and somehow turned away Varane’s goal-bound effort with an instinctive stop. Tipped Fernandes’ strike onto the inside of the post to cap a superb display. PA

Kyle Walker-Peters, 8 – Caused major problems when his deflected strike was scrambled off the line with De Gea beaten, and he smashed the post with a driven effort from range. Stopped Garnacho in his tracks with a perfect, crunching tackle. Getty

Jan Bednarek, 7 – Rushed his pass and put the ball straight out of play under pressure from Weghorst, but beyond that he put himself about and he will be delighted to leave Old Trafford with a clean sheet. Reuters

Armel Bella-Kotchap, 6 – Got away with one when he missed his header but Weghorst behind him wasn’t on his toes. Had the home faithful screaming for a penalty when he slipped and fell into Rashford’s cross, although the ball seemed to strike his chest. AFP

Romain Perraud, 7 – A tireless display. Made an important clearance from Shaw’s cross with Antony waiting at the back post and teed up Walcott with a well-placed cross at the other end. AFP

James Ward-Prowse, 8 – Almost delivered a double sucker-punch following Casemiro’s dismissal when his resulting free-kick took a deflection and flew past De Gea’s left-hand post and Old Trafford held its breath again when he clipped the bar with another beautiful strike. AP

Romeo Lavia, 7 – Ran his socks off in midfield in an industrious display. Battled superbly to draw the foul from Fernandes that led to Warde-Prowse shaking the frame of the goal. Getty

Theo Walcott, 5 – Always looked dangerous on the break but his finishing was wasteful, although there was a touch of brilliance from De Gea involved as the striker saw his close-range header turned over before he squandered another big chance on the counter. Reuters

Carlos Alcaraz, 6 – Forced Martinez to take desperate action at the cost of a booking after he had been rounded by the midfielder. Involved in a big moment when he was caught by the studs of Casemiro, who was eventually dismissed. AFP

Kamaldeen Sulemana, 6 – An energetic display, but he saw his strike repelled by Varane after good work from Adams before he was withdrawn for the final 15 minutes. PA

Che Adams, 5 – Found clear chances hard to come back as United continued to dominate despite being a man down. Played in Sulemana with his biggest contribution of note before he was replaced in a double switch in the 74th minute. Reuters

SUBS: Stuart Armstrong (on for Alcaraz ‘55), 6 – Worked hard but put his only sight of goal straight at De Gea. AP

Sekou Mara (on for Sulemana ‘76), NR – Piled on the pressure when he charged forward in the dying seconds, only to be clipped by Shaw who saw yellow. PA

Manchester United endured a frustrating afternoon in the Premier League on Sunday with a 0-0 draw against bottom-placed Southampton marked by a red card for midfielder Casemiro.

The Brazilian was sent off in the 34th minute for a high boot against Carlos Alcaraz, giving confidence to the visitors in an entertaining game with chances at both ends.

Captain Bruno Fernandes came closest for United in the second half with a low shot off the post while prolific striker Marcus Rashford saw a shot well saved in a one-on-one with Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu.

Southampton missed a string of chances, with Theo Walcott seeing a point-blank header and curling shot both brilliantly saved by David de Gea, while Kyle Walker-Peters hit the post and James Ward-Prowse saw a couple of free kicks go close.
