Match day 1 of the Uefa Champions League kicks off on Tuesday and Wednesday, while Al Ain and Al Nasr attempt to negotiate their second legs to reach the Asian Champions League semi-finals.

Here are five things for UAE sport fans to watch this week.

Uefa Champions League: Matchday 1, Tuesday and Wednesday, BeIN Sports, 10.45pm

The group stages of the tournament begin this week with Barcelona looking to put a shock defeat to Alaves in Spain’s Primera Liga out of their system. Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Luis Suarez started the 2-1 loss at Camp Nou on the bench on Saturday, but are likely to all be restored for the visit of Scottish champions Celtic. Holders Real Madrid begin their title defence against Lisbon’s Sporting on Wednesday in Group F, while Tottenham Hotspur play their first game in the competition since 2012 at home to French club Monaco at Wembley Stadium on the same day.

Asian Champions League: Quarter-final second legs, Tuesday and Wednesday, BeIN Sports, various kick-off times

Al Ain travel to Uzbekistan side Lokomotiv with the sides level pegging after the goalless first leg in the Garden City last month. The game in Tashkent is slated for a 6pm UAE kick off. Al Nasr face El Jaish on Wednesday, 3-0 up from the first leg, but with an investigation into the eligibility of striker Wanderley still to be held by the Asian Football Confederation. Action at Al Maktoum Stadium in Dubai begins at 8.45pm.

Arabian Gulf League: Super Cup, Tuesday; Matchday 1 Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Abu Dhabi Sports and Dubai Sports, various kick-off times

The curtain-raiser to the 2016/17 Arabian Gulf League season, the UAE Super Cup, sees Al Ahli play Al Jazira in Cairo, Egypt, on Tuesday. League action begins on Friday. Al Ahli, the defending champions, play host to Emirates on Saturday (5.35pm), while Al Ain begin their challenge on Sunday at home to Baniyas (8.15pm).

Formula One: Singapore Grand Prix, Friday-Sunday, BeIN Sports, various times

The action at the Singapore Grand Prix begins on Friday with practice (2pm UAE) ahead of the race on September 18 (4pm). Lewis Hamilton holds a two-point lead over his Mercedes-GP teammate Nico Rosberg and will be confident of extending his advantage at a venue that he has won at twice before, in 2009 and 2014.

Davis Cup: World Group semi-finals, Friday-Sunday, BeIN Sports, various times

The US Open may wrap up early Monday morning, but there is still plenty of tennis, with the semi-finals of the Davis Cup starting on Friday. Reigning champions Great Britain, led by Andy Murray, face Argentina, while Croatia host France.

Business Insights
  • Canada and Mexico are significant energy suppliers to the US, providing the majority of oil and natural gas imports
  • The introduction of tariffs could hinder the US's clean energy initiatives by raising input costs for materials like nickel
  • US domestic suppliers might benefit from higher prices, but overall oil consumption is expected to decrease due to elevated costs
