The 2019 Formula 2 Championship kicks off its third season on Saturday with the opening two races taking place in Bahrain.
This year all eyes are on Abu Dhabi-backed Louis Deletraz, who has joined team title holders Carlin from Charouz Racing System.
The Swiss driver takes the place vacated by George Russell, last year’s F2 champion, who has now graduated to racing for the Williams team in Formula One.
Deletraz is looking to further his ambition to follow in the current title holder’s footsteps and enter what many consider the highest strata of motor sport.
His task won’t be easy though – this year, he’ll be racing against the likes of Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time F1 world champion Michael, who has stealthily risen through the ranks of racing.
However, the ambitious 21-year-old, who spoke to The National on a visit to his Abu Dhabi-based sponsors, the financial services firm ADSS, said he was looking forward to the season ahead.
“2019 is very important to me,” he said. “I’m very excited for this season – the testing went very well and we’re expecting big things.”
Carlin are expected to be strong contenders again this season, so Deletraz has reason to have confidence.
“As a driver you always want to join the best team,” the driver said of his new employers. “And the best team want the best drivers, so we came very easily to a deal together. I’m more than pleased to join them, and they’re very pleased to have me with my experience.”
F2 is a recognised stepping stone to F1, and Deletraz says making this move is his ultimate goal.
“A 100 per cent it’s my main aim to be in F1,” the driver said. “F2 is the last step before it. I had a test last December with Haas, my first test in F1. I just need to aim for F1. That’s my dream.”
However, Deletraz is under no illusions about what he has to do right now.
“The main thing is to have a great F2 season,” he said. “I’m starting the season with the aim to win it.
“As a racing driver I think if you don’t start with that intention you’ve failed already. That’s the goal – to be up front and win-win.”
Jean-Denis Deletraz, Louis’ father, had his own brief F1 career, but went on to far greater success as a two-time class winner at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Even with this racing pedigree though, Carlin’s new driver does not find what he does for a living straightforward.
“There’s always pressure because there’s a lot of people behind you, supporting you, and there is my own pressure that I put on myself because I want to succeed,” he said.
“But I think pressure is sometimes good – it helps you just go for it.”
The F2 Bahrain Grand Prix feature race takes place on Saturday, with the sprint race on Sunday.

How the bonus system works
The two riders are among several riders in the UAE to receive the top payment of £10,000 under the Thank You Fund of £16 million (Dh80m), which was announced in conjunction with Deliveroo's £8 billion (Dh40bn) stock market listing earlier this year.
The £10,000 (Dh50,000) payment is made to those riders who have completed the highest number of orders in each market.
There are also riders who will receive payments of £1,000 (Dh5,000) and £500 (Dh2,500).
All riders who have worked with Deliveroo for at least one year and completed 2,000 orders will receive £200 (Dh1,000), the company said when it announced the scheme.
It's up to you to go green
Nils El Accad, chief executive and owner of Organic Foods and Café, says going green is about “lifestyle and attitude” rather than a “money change”; people need to plan ahead to fill water bottles in advance and take their own bags to the supermarket, he says.
“People always want someone else to do the work; it doesn’t work like that,” he adds. “The first step: you have to consciously make that decision and change.”
When he gets a takeaway, says Mr El Accad, he takes his own glass jars instead of accepting disposable aluminium containers, paper napkins and plastic tubs, cutlery and bags from restaurants.
He also plants his own crops and herbs at home and at the Sheikh Zayed store, from basil and rosemary to beans, squashes and papayas. “If you’re going to water anything, better it be tomatoes and cucumbers, something edible, than grass,” he says.
“All this throwaway plastic - cups, bottles, forks - has to go first,” says Mr El Accad, who has banned all disposable straws, whether plastic or even paper, from the café chain.
One of the latest changes he has implemented at his stores is to offer refills of liquid laundry detergent, to save plastic. The two brands Organic Foods stocks, Organic Larder and Sonnett, are both “triple-certified - you could eat the product”.
The Organic Larder detergent will soon be delivered in 200-litre metal oil drums before being decanted into 20-litre containers in-store.
Customers can refill their bottles at least 30 times before they start to degrade, he says. Organic Larder costs Dh35.75 for one litre and Dh62 for 2.75 litres and refills will cost 15 to 20 per cent less, Mr El Accad says.
But while there are savings to be had, going green tends to come with upfront costs and extra work and planning. Are we ready to refill bottles rather than throw them away? “You have to change,” says Mr El Accad. “I can only make it available.”

Where to donate in the UAE
You can donate to several registered charities through a “donation catalogue”. The use of the donation is quite specific, such as buying a fan for a poor family in Niger for Dh130.
The General Authority of Islamic Affairs & Endowments
The site has an e-donation service accepting debit card, credit card or e-Dirham, an electronic payment tool developed by the Ministry of Finance and First Abu Dhabi Bank.

Dubai Cares provides several options for individuals and companies to donate, including online, through banks, at retail outlets, via phone and by purchasing Dubai Cares branded merchandise. It is currently running a campaign called Bookings 2030, which allows people to help change the future of six underprivileged children and young people.
Those who travel on Emirates have undoubtedly seen the little donation envelopes in the seat pockets. But the foundation also accepts donations online and in the form of Skywards Miles. Donated miles are used to sponsor travel for doctors, surgeons, engineers and other professionals volunteering on humanitarian missions around the world.
On the Emirates Red Crescent website you can choose between 35 different purposes for your donation, such as providing food for fasters, supporting debtors and contributing to a refugee women fund. It also has a list of bank accounts for each donation type.
Gulf for Good raises funds for partner charity projects through challenges, like climbing Kilimanjaro and cycling through Thailand. This year’s projects are in partnership with Street Child Nepal, Larchfield Kids, the Foundation for African Empowerment and SOS Children's Villages. Since 2001, the organisation has raised more than $3.5 million (Dh12.8m) in support of over 50 children’s charities.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum launched the Noor Dubai Foundation a decade ago with the aim of eliminating all forms of preventable blindness globally. You can donate Dh50 to support mobile eye camps by texting the word “Noor” to 4565 (Etisalat) or 4849 (du).
