MANCHESTER // Mark Hughes, the Manchester City manager, has made it clear Abu Dhabi's new owners will not pay inflated prices for players when the transfer window reopens in January. Hughes flew to the capital last week for a meeting with Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, owner of the Abu Dhabi United Group which recently took over at the club, and chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak to discuss future squad strengthening plans.
The City manager returned on Thursday with his own position reinforced, despite a poor run of results that has seen City register just one win in seven Premier League matches. Hughes also knows he can start planning to improve his squad, with Roque Santa Cruz, Wayne Bridge and Lassana Diarra rumoured by the English press to be on his shopping list, putting Blackburn, Chelsea and cash-strapped Portsmouth on red alert.
But while the Welshman has been assured cash will be made available, he does not feel that means City will be prepared to pay exorbitant fees for any potential new arrivals. "There is a danger that people look at us, see a club that can be strong in the market and try to charge top dollar," he reflected. "But Sheikh Mansour and chairman Khaldoon are very astute businessmen. They have business projects all over the world that are managed correctly. The investments they make are done with cool business heads. That will apply to any acquisitions we want to make at Manchester City."
Hughes intends to take a considered look at his squad before adding to it, knowing January is a difficult month to prise top talent away from their clubs. "We need a balance in the squad, so we will pursue players we feel meet that target," he said. "That applies in all positions. It is a process I have been through many times before. Where there is an imbalance, we will try to address." Meanwhile, Portsmouth boss Tony Adams has told the club's owner Alexandre Gaydamak he will quit as manager if the club sell striker England Jermain Defoe - or any of the other players he wants to keep - in the January transfer window.

How the bonus system works
The two riders are among several riders in the UAE to receive the top payment of £10,000 under the Thank You Fund of £16 million (Dh80m), which was announced in conjunction with Deliveroo's £8 billion (Dh40bn) stock market listing earlier this year.
The £10,000 (Dh50,000) payment is made to those riders who have completed the highest number of orders in each market.
There are also riders who will receive payments of £1,000 (Dh5,000) and £500 (Dh2,500).
All riders who have worked with Deliveroo for at least one year and completed 2,000 orders will receive £200 (Dh1,000), the company said when it announced the scheme.

Who is Enric Sala?
Enric Sala is an expert on marine conservation and is currently the National Geographic Society's Explorer-in-Residence. His love of the sea started with his childhood in Spain, inspired by the example of the legendary diver Jacques Cousteau. He has been a university professor of Oceanography in the US, as well as working at the Spanish National Council for Scientific Research and is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Biodiversity and the Bio-Economy. He has dedicated his life to protecting life in the oceans. Enric describes himself as a flexitarian who only eats meat occasionally.
What is biodiversity?
According to the United Nations Environment Programme, all life on earth – including in its forests and oceans – forms a “rich tapestry of interconnecting and interdependent forces”. Biodiversity on earth today is the product of four billion years of evolution and consists of many millions of distinct biological species. The term ‘biodiversity’ is relatively new, popularised since the 1980s and coinciding with an understanding of the growing threats to the natural world including habitat loss, pollution and climate change. The loss of biodiversity itself is dangerous because it contributes to clean, consistent water flows, food security, protection from floods and storms and a stable climate. The natural world can be an ally in combating global climate change but to do so it must be protected. Nations are working to achieve this, including setting targets to be reached by 2020 for the protection of the natural state of 17 per cent of the land and 10 per cent of the oceans. However, these are well short of what is needed, according to experts, with half the land needed to be in a natural state to help avert disaster.
