Steve Smith becomes first batsman since 2002 to score two centuries in Ashes Test

Australian eighth player to achieve feat in Test cricket's oldest and most traditional bilateral series

Australia's Steve Smith has become the first batsman in 17 years to score hundreds in both innings of an Ashes Test match.

Smith, who hit 144 in the first innings of the ongoing Edgbaston Test against England, followed it up with another brilliant century in Birmingham to keep alive the tourists' bid to win the opening match.

Seven other players have achieved the feat in this series during the course of the past 137 years, four of whom are also Australian.

This is the 85th occasion a batsman has achieved the feat, with Smith becoming the 68th batsman to do so.
