Each week we select some of the best images from the world of sport.

This week saw plenty of football action across Europe, with Barcelona returning to winning ways in La Liga, although victory over Villarreal came at a cost with Lionel Messi picking up a muscle injury on his first start of the season.

There was huge shocks in English football as Premier League Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by lower-league teams.

Luke Matheson, 16, was among a number of teenagers on target in third-round action. The Rochdale defender scored his first senior goal, against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Roger Federer led Team Europe to victory in the Laver Cup while Uruguay pulled off a Rugby World Cup 2019 upset with victory over Fiji.
