Even though the game is a dead rubber, Mahdi Ali, the UAE coach, is not allowing his team to take it easy when they face Uzbekistan in the Asian Cup Group E qualifier tonight at the Bunyodkor Stadium in Tashkent.
The UAE are on 15 points and have already secured their passage to Australia along with second-placed Uzbekistan (10) in a group that also includes Hong Kong (4) and Vietnam (0).
“We want to continue our run of successful results and we want to win this game,” Mahdi Ali said as his team tries to extend their unbeaten run of 19 matches.
“As both teams have already qualified for the Asian Cup, this game provides us a chance to see some attacking football and to experiment a few things.
“I have called up four new players for the match and it is a big challenge for them and I hope it will be good motivation for them. I would assume Uzbekistan will also have some changes with some young players.”
Mohammed Yousuf and Ahmed Khamis, both from Sharjah, Al Dhafra’s midfielder Bandar Al Ahbabi and Al Wasl’s Mohammed Nasser are the four new faces in Mahdi Ali’s squad.
“The result is important too for us and therefore we will not make many changes but field a balanced line-up,” Mahdi Ali said without elaborating on the opportunity he may give the newcomers. “We will try to provide everyone with a playing opportunity.
“Most of our players are young with an average age of 24 years. They are very experienced, though, having been together for the last nine years. They have played more than 50 games together.”
Mirdjalal Kasimov is looking to avenge his team’s defeat in their first meeting in March last year.
“The UAE are a strong team and they have been growing for several years. We played well in the away game, but we lost,” the Uzbek coach said. “It is still the start of the new season in Uzbekistan, but we will try to achieve a victory.”

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

‘FSO Safer’ - a ticking bomb
The Safer has been moored off the Yemeni coast of Ras Issa since 1988.
The Houthis have been blockading UN efforts to inspect and maintain the vessel since 2015, when the war between the group and the Yemen government, backed by the Saudi-led coalition began.
Since then, a handful of people acting as a skeleton crew, have performed rudimentary maintenance work to keep the Safer intact.
The Safer is connected to a pipeline from the oil-rich city of Marib, and was once a hub for the storage and export of crude oil.
The Safer’s environmental and humanitarian impact may extend well beyond Yemen, experts believe, into the surrounding waters of Saudi Arabia, Djibouti and Eritrea, impacting marine-life and vital infrastructure like desalination plans and fishing ports.
