Brown 'no fear' as Tigers escape

Hull City escape relegation from the Premier League by the skin of their teeth after being beaten 1-0 by champions Manchester United.

HULL // Phil Brown's Hull City escaped relegation from the Premier League by the skin of their teeth after being beaten 1-0 by champions Manchester United on Survival Sunday. Darron Gibson's 24th-minute thunderbolt was enough to seal a final day win for United but the Tigers beat the drop as Newcastle went down to a 1-0 defeat at Villa Park and Middlesbrough's loss at West Ham.

Asked if there was any fear his side wouldn't make it, Brown said: "Never. Getting promotion last season was fantastic, but staying in the Premier League in front of our own fans is equally fantastic. "I had the club captain Ian Ashbee and Jimmy Bullard behind the dugouts keeping me up to date with scores elsewhere. It was nerve-racking towards the end but fully deserved. "We went a goal behind to a wonder strike from outside the box, but we played well in the first half. Nobody can question that Manchester United team, the quality was there for all to see.

Gibson's goal was a superb 30-yard strike that moved wickedly in the air before beating the Hull goalkeeper Bo Myhill. Sir Alex Ferguson made 10 changes to the team that drew 0-0 in their title-clinching game against Arsenal last weekend, with Gibson, Lee Martin and Ritchie De Leat getting rare starts, but none of the other relegation threatened sides could complain at the enthusiasm and eagerness shown by United's youngsters.

And Hull had chances to draw level, the best coming from Andy Dawson who forced Tomasz Kuszczak into a fine save. Then as news of an Aston Villa goal came through, the home fans celebrated despite their side being a goal down. City ended the half on top with Nick Barmby's shot from the edge of the box bringing a comfortable save from Kuszczak. The champions came out firing in the second half and Rafael's cross caused havoc in the City defence with Kevin Kilbane clearing from under his crossbar.

Barmby then forced Kuszczak into a good save from a close range header and Michael Turner's header with eight minutes to go was stopped by the Polish keeper on the line. While United prepare for their Champions League final against Barcelona, Hull can look forward to another season in the top flight. sports@thenational.ae

British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.

Sinopharm vaccine explained

The Sinopharm vaccine was created using techniques that have been around for decades. 

“This is an inactivated vaccine. Simply what it means is that the virus is taken, cultured and inactivated," said Dr Nawal Al Kaabi, chair of the UAE's National Covid-19 Clinical Management Committee.

"What is left is a skeleton of the virus so it looks like a virus, but it is not live."

This is then injected into the body.

"The body will recognise it and form antibodies but because it is inactive, we will need more than one dose. The body will not develop immunity with one dose," she said.

"You have to be exposed more than one time to what we call the antigen."

The vaccine should offer protection for at least months, but no one knows how long beyond that.

Dr Al Kaabi said early vaccine volunteers in China were given shots last spring and still have antibodies today.

“Since it is inactivated, it will not last forever," she said.

How it works

Each player begins with one of the great empires of history, from Julius Caesar's Rome to Ramses of Egypt, spread over Europe and the Middle East.

Round by round, the player expands their empire. The more land they have, the more money they can take from their coffers for each go.

As unruled land and soldiers are acquired, players must feed them. When a player comes up against land held by another army, they can choose to battle for supremacy.

A dice-based battle system is used and players can get the edge on their enemy with by deploying a renowned hero on the battlefield.

Players that lose battles and land will find their coffers dwindle and troops go hungry. The end goal? Global domination of course.
