LIVERPOOL // The return of Fernando Torres, new contract extension talks for manager Rafael Benitez and now Robbie Keane has ended his Premier League goal drought - things are getting better and better for Liverpool.
Keane scored twice in the first half to lead Liverpool to a 3-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday night, with Alvaro Arbeloa adding the third in injury time.
By then Keane was off the pitch as he had been taken off in the 72nd minute for Torres, making his first appearance for the title contenders after six games out with a hamstring injury.
"After two goals, I was expecting a hat-trick, but in a way, I have to say OK we have to win, it's the most important thing and Torres has to play too," Benitez explained. "And because they were playing really high, Torres could be a big problem for them because of his pace."
Benitez acknowledged the comparisons between Keane and Peter Crouch, now at Portsmouth.
Crouch needed 19 games to score his first Liverpool goal, Keane waited 11 for his first Premier League strike. "As soon as he (Crouch) scored, he scored a lot of goals, so hopefully it will be the same with Robbie," Benitez said.
"Strikers always think about scoring goals, so I think it was very, very important for him, and OK now hopefully we will see him scoring goals every weekend."

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
