Arabian Gulf League: Baniyas dismiss manager Jose Gomes

Baniyas have parted company with Jose Gomes after the Portuguese failed to steer the club away from the bottom of the Arabian Gulf League.

Appointed in late October as Uruguayan Pablo Repetto’s replacement, Gomes guided the Abu Dhabi side to only four points from 12 league matches. During his time at Baniyas, the team lost 10 league fixtures and sit rooted to the foot of the table. Salem Al Orafi, the former Baniyas player and mainstay of the club, has been placed in temporary charge.

Gomes’ final match was Friday night’s 4-2 home defeat to Al Shabab. As such, Baniyas are seven points from safety with 10 rounds remaining. It marks a pretty uninspiring few months for Gomes, who was sacked as manager of Saudi Arabian champions Al Ahli shortly before being appointed at Baniyas.

The 46-year-old, who has managed a number of clubs in his homeland, had previously been in charge of Al Taawoun, leading the Saudi team to the 2015 Asian Champions League play-offs.

Tax authority targets shisha levy evasion

The Federal Tax Authority will track shisha imports with electronic markers to protect customers and ensure levies have been paid.

Khalid Ali Al Bustani, director of the tax authority, on Sunday said the move is to "prevent tax evasion and support the authority’s tax collection efforts".

The scheme’s first phase, which came into effect on 1st January, 2019, covers all types of imported and domestically produced and distributed cigarettes. As of May 1, importing any type of cigarettes without the digital marks will be prohibited.

He said the latest phase will see imported and locally produced shisha tobacco tracked by the final quarter of this year.

"The FTA also maintains ongoing communication with concerned companies, to help them adapt their systems to meet our requirements and coordinate between all parties involved," he said.

As with cigarettes, shisha was hit with a 100 per cent tax in October 2017, though manufacturers and cafes absorbed some of the costs to prevent prices doubling.
