DUBAI // Al Ahli's Rodrigo Lima has been ruled out for three months following a successful operation on his right knee on Monday.
The striker, a huge success since his summer transfer from Benfica, had surgery in Portugal after sustaining the injury during his side’s 4-1 victory against Al Shaab 10 days ago. Lima had already scored in that match, taking his tally to 19 goals in 24 appearances in all competitions.
The loss of the Brazilian is therefore a significant blow for Ahli, with the club currently second in the Arabian Gulf League at the halfway stage and with the semi-final of the Arabian Gulf Cup to come against Al Shabab later this month.

Next month, Ahli begin their quest to improve upon last year’s runner-up finish in the President’s Cup, although they did not qualify for the 2016 Asian Champions League. Last year, Lima scored vital goals as Ahli progressed to the final of the continental competition, only to be beaten 1-0 on aggregate by China’s Guangzhou Evergrande.
Lima, 32, has been replaced in Ahli’s Arabian Gulf League squad by Ciel, his fellow Brazilian who spent the past 15 months out as he recovered from a double fracture to his ankle. Ciel returned to action as a late substitute in the 0-0 draw at Al Wasl on Monday night.
Contrary to reports, Ahli are confident Lima will feature for the first team again before the conclusion of the season.
