Al Ahli keep pressure on Al Ain as striker Moussa Sow’s strike at the death defeats Sharjah

Whoever wins the Arabian Gulf League title this season is going to be doing it the hard way.

Following Al Ain’s last-minute winner away at Dibba on Friday night, it was Al Ahli’s turn to leave it late on Saturday, with Senegalese centre-forward Moussa Sow netting in stoppage time for a 1-0 victory at Sharjah.

The win keeps Ahli two points behind league leaders Ahli with eight games to play.

It looked like it would be a frustrating night for Cosmin Olaroiu’s team and two dropped points would have been a major blow to their title ambitions at this stage of the season.

Ahli had the best of the chances with Brazilian striker Ciel twice hitting the crossbar (once in each half) and compatriot Everton Ribeiro having a shot well saved by Sharjah keeper Rashid Ahmed in the first period.

Sharjah also had a golden opportunity late when Walid Abbas got back to clear Ricardinho’s shot off the line, with Majed Naser well beaten.

Ahli kept plugging away and it paid off when Sow rose to head home Ciel’s cross three minutes into injury time.

Al Wasl wins

Earlier, Fabio Lima scored once in each half to give Al Wasl a comfortable 2-0 win over bottom-placed Al Shaab, who took another step towards relegation.

The Brazilian forward slotted home Hassan Ameen’s cross in the 31st minute and then struck five minutes after the break.

It was the same combination — a cross from the left from Ameen and Lima pounced, this time with a header from close range.

Wasl’s win keeps pressure on Al Wahda and Al Nasr in the race for third.
