Ahead of Round 19 of the 2015/16 Arabian Gulf League, we take a look at the biggest stories heading into the week’s action.

Can title contenders make lighter work?

The division’s top two teams, Al Ain and Al Ahli, struggled to get over the line last week, with both needing last-gasp winners to keep title challenges on track. With eight rounds remaining, the pressure will continue to rise, making points a priority.

Leaders Al Ain seem to have the easier assignment, hosting an out-of-form Al Shabab. Ahli, just two points behind the champions, entertain a dangerous Al Wahda side.

Will the gap on Al Nasr close farther?

For a while, Al Nasr were comfortable in third, in what could still prove to be the division’s final slot for the 2017 Asian Champions League.

However, two defeats in three matches have brought closest competitors Al Wasl and Al Wahda to within two and three points, respectively.

A home tie against a surprisingly sturdy Dibba constitutes a tricky test for Nasr, although Wasl travel to Fujairah and Wahda to second-placed Al Ahli.

Is Jazira’s recent renaissance to continue?

The problems at Al Jazira this season have been well documented, with new foreign signings underperforming, defensive troubles persisting and Abel Braga’s tenure short and unsuccessful. Three consecutive victories in all competitions have raised morale, as Henk ten Cate coaxes more from an admittedly talented side.

Should they defeat Baniyas this week, Jazira could climb alongside their capital rivals in sixth place.

Baniyas, though, are unbeaten in seven matches.

Who look like relegation fodder?

This represents a pivotal round in the battle to beat the drop. Bottom side Al Shaab languish 11 points from Al Dhafra, the club immediately above them.

The basement club host 12th-placed Sharjah on Friday knowing nothing less than a derby victory will do.

Dhafra travel to Emirates, the team three spots and three points above them.

With 11th-placed Fujairah entertaining a prolific Wasl, this is a real opportunity for Sharjah and Dhafra to make up ground.
