DUBAI // Adil Hermach, the Al Wahda midfielder, said the continuity at the club should help them challenge for the Arabian Gulf League title this season.

The Moroccan, who joined midway through 2013/14 campaign from Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal, played a significant role in Wahda's runner-up finish last term behind champions Al Ahli, when the Abu Dhabi side climbed from 10th in the table.

Under coach Jose Peseiro, installed as Karel Jarolim's replacement in November, Wahda regrouped from a poor start to lose only once in their final 15 matches. They won all of their final six matches.

Understandably, the club chose to retain their entire foreign contingent – Hermach, Sebastian Tagliabue, Damian Diaz and Hussain Fadel – and such stability places Hermach in confident mood heading into the new season.

Wahda open their campaign on Tuesday, at home to Kalba.

“There are only little changes, nothing big, which can only be good for the team,” said Hermach, speaking in his role as Adidas brand ambassador.

“We know each other from last year and it will help us. We know about each player’s qualities so it will be easier.

“Last year was a very nice ending because we were second, but we hope to do the same or even better. We want to do the best we can – it’s not about where we finish, but to prove we can play in the championship.

“We want to say that we’re Wahda, we’re here and we can be champion. It’s exciting.”
