It was a spicy weekend for relations between Italy and Spain. First, "La Roja" and the "Azzurri" were drawn in the same Group for Euro 2012.
That let the Italians remind the Spanish that, over time, the boys in blue have won more than the players in red, before acknowledging that, as world and European champions, the reds have recently gained the upper hand.
Then, on Sunday, we witnessed Serie A's Spanish experiment suffer the most humiliating of its several setbacks so far.
The score line Fiorentina 3, Roma 0 was not even the worse aspect of the day for Roma's Spanish coach, Luis Enrique, appointed to supposedly bring Barcelona-style football to the Italian top flight. Or some tiki-taka, as one-touch pass and move is known in Spain.
Having themselves suspended Daniel Pablo Osvaldo for the game because the striker fought with teammate Erik Lamela, Roma lost three players to red cards in defeat, including Fernando Gago and Bojan Krkic, two of several players recently recruited from the Primera Liga. Gabriel Heinze, another summer recruit should probably also have been dismissed.
Amid all this loss of control, Enrique looks more and more like the novice manager he is.
But blame should be shared out among those of his bosses who were involved in the recruitment of players. Heinze has always been a unpolished ruffian, and Gago prone to ponderousness on the ball and fits of pique off it.
Roma's priority now is not so much to find the tiki-taka, but lose the temper-temper.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.

To mark Bodytree’s 10th anniversary, the coming season will be filled with celebratory activities:
- September 21 Anyone interested in becoming a certified yoga instructor can sign up for a 250-hour course in Yoga Teacher Training with Jacquelene Sadek. It begins on September 21 and will take place over the course of six weekends.
- October 18 to 21 International yoga instructor, Yogi Nora, will be visiting Bodytree and offering classes.
- October 26 to November 4 International pilates instructor Courtney Miller will be on hand at the studio, offering classes.
- November 9 Bodytree is hosting a party to celebrate turning 10, and everyone is invited. Expect a day full of free classes on the grounds of the studio.
- December 11 Yogeswari, an advanced certified Jivamukti teacher, will be visiting the studio.
- February 2, 2018 Bodytree will host its 4th annual yoga market.
Sheikh Zayed's poem
When it is unveiled at Abu Dhabi Art, the Standing Tall exhibition will appear as an interplay of poetry and art. The 100 scarves are 100 fragments surrounding five, figurative, female sculptures, and both sculptures and scarves are hand-embroidered by a group of refugee women artisans, who used the Palestinian cross-stitch embroidery art of tatreez. Fragments of Sheikh Zayed’s poem Your Love is Ruling My Heart, written in Arabic as a love poem to his nation, are embroidered onto both the sculptures and the scarves. Here is the English translation.
