It was a proud moment for the crew of Azzam, the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team, who have returned home to a winner’s welcome after claiming the Volvo Ocean Race and the accompanying in-port regatta series. This double victory is proof that the UAE can compete globally in the world of sport.
As The National reports today, the crew is in the country to present the trophy to Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority. Azzam’s victory was not easy, nor was it lucky. Preparation and planning were paramount. Tough calculations were also made during each of the nine legs of the race – based on weather conditions at each stopover, the condition of the boat and competitors. Enormous credit should go to skipper Ian Walker, his crew and support staff.
When Azzam claimed top spot, Adil Khalid also became the first person from this region to win the 62,764-kilometre ocean marathon. His was not just a personal achievement, it is a victory that has made the entire nation proud.

Three ways to limit your social media use
Clinical psychologist, Dr Saliha Afridi at The Lighthouse Arabia suggests three easy things you can do every day to cut back on the time you spend online.
1. Put the social media app in a folder on the second or third screen of your phone so it has to remain a conscious decision to open, rather than something your fingers gravitate towards without consideration.
2. Schedule a time to use social media instead of consistently throughout the day. I recommend setting aside certain times of the day or week when you upload pictures or share information.
3. Take a mental snapshot rather than a photo on your phone. Instead of sharing it with your social world, try to absorb the moment, connect with your feeling, experience the moment with all five of your senses. You will have a memory of that moment more vividly and for far longer than if you take a picture of it.

Install an air filter in your home.
Close your windows and turn on the AC.
Shower or bath after being outside.
Wear a face mask.
Stay indoors when conditions are particularly poor.
