Make jaywalkers face the results of their laziness

  • English
  • Arabic

With regard to your news article, Pedestrians opt for jaywalking over safer bridge near Abu Dhabi Mall (September 10) disappointing to witness educated people violating laws in such an irresponsible way.

It is important for people to understand that they might be able to save a few minutes by crossing at these places but what they tend to forget is that each time they do so, they put their life in grave danger.

It is high time that the authorities got tough on jaywalkers and imposed hefty fines to deter them from repeating this behaviour in the future.

Fatima Suhail, Sharjah

I have a suggestion: if you get hit by a car when you are jaywalking (and there are safe options close by), the insurance won’t pay your hospital and court bills.

When people know this, I think they shall think twice before ignoring rules and regulations and risking their lives.

Brigitte von Bulow, Abu Dhabi

I use this intersection but don’t recall seeing any sign here. They should make it more visible.

In praise of Yusuf Islam’s new music

Some of your readers have expressed their dislike of the latest album by Yusuf Islam, Yusuf Islam talks about his spiritual memoir, living in the UAE and his next album (September 11) .

One of your correspondents described his music as depressing. I disagree. I always find it quite spiritual and uplifting. He is a man to be greatly admired.

Noora Umm Ahmed, Dubai

His music was and is real, not like a lot of the silly so-called songwriters of today.

Hunting displays at Adihex ‘upsetting’

When I went to Adihex today, I knew it was a hunting exhibition (Hunters on the prowl for trophies at Adihex, September 10) along with other activities on display and I just planned to stay away from the hunting section.

But instead I found myself in the midst of it all and couldn’t find a way away from the stuffed dead animals, the hunting knifes, the weapons, the photos of dead animals. It bought home how big the “murder for sport” industry is.

Lisa Jackson-Wiedmont, Abu Dhabi

It is terribly sad to see that stuffed wild animals are at this show.

More help needed after Indian floods

Jammu and Kashmir has been devastated by unprecedented flooding (Anger boils over in Indian Kashmir over flood rescue delay, September 10).

Hundreds of people have been killed and millions have been displaced, with an entire village wiped out by a landslide.

Thousands of soldiers of the Indian army have been risking their lives to rescue people but still there are complaints about the inadequacy of the relief effort.

As the flood water starts to recede, providing people with medical assistance and their rehabilitation will be major challenge.

The government must do a lot more to help the people out in India’s hour of national crisis.

Credit for Gaga’s toned-down gig

With regard to the reaction to Lady Gaga performing in the UAE, Emotional UAE fans go all gaga over Gaga (September 10), her beliefs and opinions are not what's on show – her talent is.

I think its obvious she is a good person because she toned down her performance because of where she was – something I don’t always see from expats in the UAE.

Jen Bishop, Abu Dhabi

Comments that Lady Gaga does not appeal to those who value musical talent over gimmicks make me laugh.

The days of fame coming from talent are long gone. Anyone with a gimmick and good marketing can be famous. But I still believe Lady Gaga should be praised for toning down her performance.

While that doesn’t necessarily make her a good person, it shows she is a smart person who will be able to return to the UAE in the future.

Kristin Fucik, Dubai

She might be a bit outrageous, but at least she is not harming anyone and is bringing a bit of light and joy in this chaotic world.

Who should pay for repainting?

In reference to your article, Should outgoing Dubai tenant have to pay for repainting costs? (September 10), my friend had to pay Dh3,000 per room for her villa at Raha Gardens in Abu Dhabi.

Jacqueline Craig, Abu Dhabi

It is just wear and tear. Landlords should accept some minor damage – including having to repaint.
