Expat divorce should be settled at home

  • English
  • Arabic

Regarding your story, The cost of getting divorced in the UAE (July 3), it must be noted that divorce is the most hateful of all things and can be unpleasant and traumatic for not just the couple who decide to part ways but also for their children.

To seek a divorce or to decide to separate is never easy for anyone who has been married. It is devastating to end a marriage that was once blissful. It is important that before filing for divorce, the couple should make every possible effort to reconcile and protect their marriage from falling apart.

Sometimes being counselled by professionals, family members or friends can help restore a broken relationship. People should understand that the divorce process involves a lot of hassles and hidden challenges.

Divorce is always a nasty business for the couples and can be a very good one for lawyers. Concerning divorce in the UAE, I think that it is better to wait to complete the divorce proceedings until you are back in your own country. Brigitte Tibet von Bulow, Abu Dhabi

Divorce in the UAE seems not that much different than in the West, where the husband nearly always loses everything.

A rising tennis star in London

With regards to your report Pushed to the limit, Serena Williams survives Heather Watson's upset bid at Wimbledon (July 4), British tennis star Heather Watson lost the match to Serena Williams, but she won hearts across the globe for her plucky fight. Clearly she is a player with great potential and will be in the game for a long and successful time.

Ever present need for parking

I read your story Dubai Sports City in talks over funding for Fifa-compliant football stadium site (July 4) with great interest. Where are attendees of this stadium going to park? For events at the cricket stadium, people are currently using empty lots across from it, as well as in front of the canal. But there aren't even enough spaces for residents, let alone their guests, in some buildings.

Majdel Musa, Dubai

Parking is always a problem in Dubai. With some of the villas on Dubai's main road used for commercial purposes and no extra parking added for customers, there is a shortage of resident parking spots. I am afraid that this new stadium could make the problem worse.

Solar Impulse is an inspiration

Concerning your editorial, With more work, solar is the future (July 4), it must be noted that the Solar Impulse is a source of inspiration and hope that we could power the world with solar energy reducing our dependency on fossil fuels. That it took off from Abu Dhabi demonstrates the UAE's commitment to developing green technology and the commissioning of two solar plants is testament to this commitment.

Tailgating in Australia

I have a solution to the problem raised in your story Dubai tailgaters beware, cameras to catch you are activated today (July 1). The UAE might like to consider an option adopted in Australia. After repeat offences, the vehicles should be crushed by the authorities. In Australia, antisocial road behaviour, as we call it, could result in impounding the vehicle, auctioning or selling by authorities, and even crushing or selling it for scrap metal.

Comfortable air travel is a must

Concerning your review Etihad A380 business class review: Bring your pyjamas and get some rest (July 5), I think that all the airlines should spend money on comfortable seating regardless of class of travel.

But I don’t understand why some people think they need to have the equivalent of a serviced apartment when travelling?

I understand the need for more peace and quiet when travelling, which my husband and I pay for when we upgrade but that decision is always for more legroom. Airlines must do a little more research into making the travel experience more comfortable for all. Having said that my favourite airline is still Etihad Airways.
