Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, posted video to social media to commemorate the 35th anniversary of his father's death.

The video showed images and film footage of Sheikh Mohammed and his father, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed, who died on October 7, 1990.

“May God have mercy on my father,” he said, on X. “I learnt from my father the simplicity of living, self-control and not to occupy myself with trivial things.

“I learnt kindness with everyone and tolerance with people. On the anniversary of his death, we remember his soul, his lessons, his wisdom, his sincerity in serving his homeland and building the glory of his people.”

Sheikh Rashid played a key role in both the formation of the Emirates and the rise of Dubai.

Approached in 1968 by UAE Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who was Ruler of Abu Dhabi at the time, Sheikh Rashid agreed to a formal accord that would bind the two emirates together. The remaining emirates followed three years later.

Sheikh Rashid is also considered the father of modern Dubai after he guided the emirate's rapid development under his rule, from 1958 until his death.

Long before the discovery of oil, Sheikh Rashid ushered in a pro-business policy, creating an atmosphere that put the emirate on the path to success.
